I took Zoë in to the vet's office today to get a set of SoftPaws applied (installed? Not sure of the proper term here). She's now got lovely purple toenails! I had another great talk with Dan the Vet Assistant, got some good suggestions for working on some of her little behavior problems (she's a biter... nothing bad, but she's prone to nip when she's done being petted or sometimes just because she's feeling peevish). The SoftPaws should help a lot with the scratching of doors and doorframes, though. Anyway, SoftPaws firmly in place, we figured it was safe to remove the gate at the top of the stairs and let her explore...

A few funny cat moments behind the cut, in case this sort of thing bores you. :-) )

[livejournal.com profile] miggy, have you seen this article in the Idaho Statesman yet?

Some quotes:

Picture this on our quarter: "Sun Valley Lodge with two skiers in the foreground drinking 16-ounce lattes to pass the time and keep warm."

I like Sun Valley Lodge as much as the next person. But this fufu coffee thing is getting out of hand.

And:

One entrant suggested "a bobcat next to a frothy, whitewater-infested river." When he's finished with the quarter, maybe the governor could do something about our sinister whitewater infestation.

Or how about this:

Some of the entries were from children, so allowances must be made. A child's imagination isn't hampered, thankfully, by practical considerations. Thus we have "an eagle soaring over the Snake River watertops, with a nice sunset going behind the mountains. The bumblebees, dragonflies and butterflies flying through bright red and purple flowers. Weeds and cottontail blowing in the wind by the riverside. A bird's nest in a tree with a tiny baby bird in the nest waiting for some food. Some fish jumping in and out of the water and ripples as they go back into the water. Frogs hopping back and forth on lily pads. Mountain lions roaring in the trees. Crickets singing on a rock. Deer drinking out of a stream. Baby deer chasing after one another. Water skippers skipping along."

A beautiful image — especially if you have a full-color quarter the size of a Ferris wheel.

And my favorite:

Credit an 8-year-old named Andrew with the boldest idea of all. Idaho's quarter, he wrote, "would be made with the hardest metal known to man, and it would have my face on it."

All the cool kids are doing it...
When you see this in a friend's journal, quote Shakespeare!

Okay, off the top of my head:
"In my stars I am above thee; but be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em."

I always loved that one because it so often gets quoted out of context by people who regard it with utter seriousness. Which probably makes it even funnier, now that I think of it.

If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend tracking down the version of "Twelfth Night" that was done in the late 1960s, if for no other reason than to see a younger Sir Alec Guinness as Malvolio, prancing around trying to impress Olivia.
