We just got back from a dinner run to a local taco stand (they have really yummy pollo en mole), which reminded me of something I'd been wanting to share.

They've got the menu up on the side of the truck, both in English and Spanish... and at the bottom is a basic translation list. The funny thing is that the list is comprised of the various meats they use... and the word "mole."

So, we've got:
Carne Asada = Beefsteak
Al Pastor = Pork
Pollo = Chicken
Lengua = Beeftongue
Mole = Mole

Now, is it just me, or does that sort of imply that they serve mole meat?

And yeah, obviously I know what mole actually is, but it always gives me just a bit of a chuckle every time I see it.

Dude, I love Mexican food. And those little stands are the best. And mole? Holy crap that's good stuff!

Is that the little trailer by the 76 Gas Station on the way to the freeway? They are very nice, and pretty yummy food! (I took my mom there when she was here, and it turned out to be Mexican Mother's Day - they gave us roses).

Yep! That's the place! The food is fantastic... and I love their mole.

I often head over there at lunchtime for their Bean & Rice bowl, with beefsteak. Cheaper than the equivalent dish over at Taco Bell, and much, MUCH better and fresher.

That reminds me of The Mole from the most recent Austin Powers movie ;)

LOL! It's probably 'cause mole is hard to translate easily (just as a word it means bulk).

Weirder to me, though, is Al Pastor = Pork 'cause pork is carne de cerdo, usually. (Pastor means shepherd. Which gives visions of Mrs. Lovett's meat pies... {g}) I know just enough Spanish to really screw me up.

See, that's what I thought too... but I looked it up online, and apparently it's a fairly common term for pork. I'm actually wondering if it's pork prepared a certain way, which would make sense, I guess.

Which gives visions of Mrs. Lovett's meat pies...

LOL!

Might be one of those regional dialect thangs, depending on where you're from. Most of the Mexican/Spanish I hear down here is largely Sonoran, o'course.

Al pastor means roughly "shepherd style," or grilled/barbecued. From what I understand, items cooked al pastor used to be made with lamb, but pork made a good, readily available substitute.
