Alas, I'm not watching the Emmy's, so I can't join in all the commenting... because, of course, even though the awards ceremony is being held here in the Pacific time zone, we won't get it until three hours after the rest of the country. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And even more stupid, why would anyone on the west coast bother watching? Since all the results are being discussed everywhere online already anyway, by the rest of the country who gets to watch it live.

I'm pretty sure everyone has some type of food that they consider to be "poor food." I don't mean that in a derogatory way... it's just the sort of meal your parents were likely to serve when the money and fresh food supplies started running out before payday. My parents had a bit of an odd choice for "poor food": salmon patties with french fries and fry sauce. My mom would buy canned salmon on sale and keep it in the food storage, and we generally always had saltine crackers and eggs on hand... then it was just a matter of either using frozen french fries or making them from scratch if we had the potatoes. And, of course, fry sauce is just mayo and ketchup. I mention this, because it's what I fixed for dinner tonight... still yummy after all these years. But do you know how hard it is to find saltines without high fructose corn syrup?!? I know it's just a tiny amount, but sheesh, why do we need HFCS in saltine crackers?!?! We ended up running down to PCC Natural Food Market in Kirkland last night to pick up some organic saltines.

In other news, I've got the freezer all stocked with Kashi frozen dinners (they were conveniently on sale at Safeway yesterday) and I picked up four tank tops yesterday at Target, to wear with some of [livejournal.com profile] rackham's button down shirts. I'm trying to get my fill of playing LOTRO, since it's fairly difficult to do one-handed, meaning it's likely to be a few weeks before I can do much with my characters there again. My cough finally seems to be subsiding, although it's hard to tell because I've been taking Mucinex-D at regular intervals (pleasebegonebyTuesdaypleasebegonebyTuesday).

My m-i-l was IM-ing with us earlier today from Cairns, having just left Brisbane (I believe my f-i-l is speaking at several different climate/pollution conferences around Australia and New Zealand, so they decided to make a huge vacation out of it). I'm so jealous... I would love to go back to Australia! I still need to decide if there's anything Australian I want them to pick up for me that I can't get mail order here in the US. It's been so long since we were there, that I'm beginning to forget all the fun things we found... and it's too early to have them snag some Christmas candy/chocolate. Anyway, she made a very good suggestion for the upcoming surgery trip, recommending taking along a towel and a bowl for use on the drive home after the surgery. I wouldn't have thought of that, but I suspect it might come in handy (given the way I tend to react to anesthetics). I'm really hoping that I'm so drugged up that I'll just sleep the whole way home, but I doubt I'll be that lucky. :-p

My question is actually why should ANYONE, period, watch it? ;)

My plan is to watch something more interesting, then tomorrow read the blogs to find out who made an ass out of themselves, and then watch those few minutes on YouTube.

It's the American way.

Oh, I like that idea! For me, the only reason to watch is to be able to chat about it with people online... and since they seem determined to deny me that option, it does make sense to track down just the bits I see other people talking about, after they make their way online.

I had no idea they waited to show you all the show! That sucks...

And my mom totally made cheap meals like that...ours was Spam, Kraft macaroni and cheese, and green peas. :o) Isn't it funny what kind of memories and feelings are attached to meals like that? :o)

And Kashi dinners are yummy!!!!

When is your surgery going to be? Good luck!!!!

Yeah, I really don't understand it, since it wouldn't kill them to start it at 6:00 on a Sunday evening. Except, of course, that it wouldn't help their ratings at 9:00, and they'd have to come up with other things to show in that time slot.

ours was Spam, Kraft macaroni and cheese, and green peas.

We had Spamburgers once a year, whether we wanted them or not. I think my mom thought it was her duty as a military wife to serve Spam, or something.

And Kashi dinners are yummy!!!!

I've been so happy with them! It used to be, I'd have to run down to one of the natural food markets to get good quality frozen dinners like that... now they're on sale at my local supermarket. Fantastic!

When is your surgery going to be? Good luck!!!!

Thanks! It's going to be on Wednesday, with the pre-op stuff on Tuesday. It's made a bit more complicated by being at a clinic on the other side of the state, but I think we're pretty well set up for it. I am so looking forward to this... very ready to have the shoulder problems be OVER.

Huh. You know, I honestly don't think we ever had to have any particular food because there were money issues. Closest would probably be tuna casserole (macaroni, two cans Campbell's Cream of Mushroom, two cans of tuna packed in oil, not water, an an extra can of mushrooms, the little teeny can. Which isn't particularly cheap when you add up, but it's definitely quick and easy. Only reason I don't make it more often here, minus the extra mushrooms, etc., is it REALLY doesn't freeze well.)

I forgot the Emmys. But then I never watch them anyway. Sometimes I might watch the Oscars, maybe.

Jesus. And they wonder why Americans are fat.

That stuff is in friggin' EVERYTHING.

I've been pleased to find, lately, more and more companies are starting to take it out (which may have more to do with the skyrocketing price of corn due to ethanol, than to customer demand). It still seems to crop up in the weirdest places, though.

They are? AWESOME.

I try my best, but it's really NOT easy to get stuff without it in it.

Last week I bought a COKE from the "Latin Foods" section of my supermarket. It's made in Mexico with actual SUGAR. It tasted so much better!

Yeah, it shows up at our local supermarkets from time to time too... in the Latin Foods section and, during certain holidays, in the Jewish Foods section. It makes me wish I liked the taste of Coke. :-(

Oh, if you have a CostCo near you, it would be worth checking to see if they have any cases of Coca-Cola from Mexico... ours did, the last time I was in there. Seriously, I think the fact that this stuff is being made available more and more is a really good sign.

Oh, I will! Thank you :D

I'm trying to make more things from scratch now, which is one way to get around the HFCS issue. It's tough because my husband's palate is that of a 12 year old Southern boy, while I like Japanese, Indian, and Italian foods :D So while I want to make my stuff, it means cooking 2 meals.

That damned stuff is in everything! Somebody wrote the other day that had anyone ever heard of a chef adding it into a recipe and, of course, the answer is no. It's completely unnecessary - and grossly unhealthy.

If not a bowl and a towel, then a couple of big plastic bags and some wet-wipes.... but hopefully you won't need them!

Cheap food of childhood - my gran would get a big enamel bowl of fresh fish for only a few pence from the boats - the small plaice that were too small to sell, called dabs, and just dust them with flour and fry them. She'd put a big meat plate full in the middle of the table, and give us a plate of bread and butter and that was it. Oh, and tomato sauce/ketchup.

Mum would give us tinned spaghetti on toast, or Green Giant sweetcorn in a bowl with a slice bread and butter.

Heh. Yes, we had poor food. Chili was a favorite with us, and tuna noodle casserole. Mac and cheese. Salmon patties, too. In fact, there was a long period of time when that's pretty much all we had.

Hey, that sounds like what we'd eat, too. Yum! I'm really craving salmon patties now. :)
