I've been meaning to post about this here, but kept getting sidetracked by roadtrips and such... so, are [livejournal.com profile] rackham and I the only ones watching "Treasure Hunters"?

Neither of us have ever been able to get into any of the various reality shows that have popped up over the years, so we've been a bit surprised at how hooked we've gotten on TH. I think it may be because it combines elements of all sorts of things we've enjoyed in the past: those old zany, schlocky race movies (i.e. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World or The Great Race or The Gumball Rally), there's a bit of a LARPing feel to the whole thing and there's something vaguely reminiscent of the old Infocom games. I guess what it comes down to is that we could sort of see ourselves doing something like this and enjoying it... or perhaps playing it as a videogame.

That said, we generally don't start watching each episode until about half of it has aired, so we can a) fast forward through the commercials and b) fast forward whenever things start to get really ugly (and considering how sleep-deprived the contestants are getting, this is happening more and more).

We're really hoping that the Brown family will be allowed to continue, even without one member of their team (and oh, how I cringed when he got injured this week!), since they're so close to a point where they'd be given the choice to leave one behind anyway.

I was so hoping that the Fogal family would choose to leave their daughter behind. What a spoiled, whiny brat. Though from what we've seen of the sort of people her parents are, well, it's not too surprising. Could they *be* more horrible and unlikable? If I were him, I would have been very concerned about my congregation seeing me behave in such awful, underhanded ways... because if I were in his congregation? It would certainly give me second and third thoughts about his qualifications. That said, I do know that things can get really skewed on these shows (as evidenced by what happened to [livejournal.com profile] rosiewook's friend on that WifeSwap show), so it's possible we're being given the worst possible edits of the Fogals. But still, they're not exactly going out of their way to look good on camera, either.

I'm still not sure if the Geniuses are going to come back for their third person... though thinking it through logically, I'm guessing they must have. I don't think they were more than three hours behind the Ex-CIA group, which means that if they'd abandoned a man, they would have made it to the gold first. I could be wrong on the timing of it though... the show was very non-linear this week, so it was hard to keep track.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] rackham pointed out to me, and we double-checked on a recap site, that the gold was actually in the last box before the boat... so that blows my little bit of "logic" right out of the water. The thing is, I don't know that the other teams are aware that the gold has already been found.

I also think it's likely that if any of the teams did decide to drop a member, they would wind up running into problems later... that there would be some task they have to accomplish a little further down the road that wouldn't be impossible to do with only two people, but would be much, much harder. Plus, when you consider how little sleep they've been able to get and how much driving they have to do, I don't think anyone can afford to be lose a potential driver.

I'm feeling really bad for everyone though, seeing how absolutely exhausted they all are. So little sleep, so much driving and so much physical exhertion. I hope they get a chance for a good night's sleep soon! It's tiring just watching them!
