Guess who has free wi-fi!
Jun. 6th, 2006 08:07 pmThat would be the Sacramento airport!
Color me pleasantly surprised... especially since my grandfather ended up getting me here VERY early (he got it into his head that we'd go out to dinner and then straight to the airport... only we ended up going to dinner early). Thankfully my laptop is all nicely charged up, too.
It's been a fun week, spent mostly sitting around and chatting with my Grandma Carmen (who is really my step-grandmother, but she's been around for most of my life, so it really makes no difference) and helping her with some of her genealogy research. With just a few minutes on the internet, I was able to get her some info she didn't already have, so I'm hoping I'll be able to find a lot more when I can really spend some time on it. Her father was from the Netherlands, so I'm also hoping to get occasional help from a few people on my flist on translations (I can only do a very minimal amount of deciphering of Dutch). Her mother was from Mexico and she's actually got quite a bit of info on that side, so I'll be concentrating on the other.
My grandfather is absolutely convinced that the Adventurous Eating gene skipped a generation. My mom and aunt were down for a visit about a month or so ago and apparently they frustrated his efforts to take them to his favorite restaurants... they ended up eating mostly at buffet places and ordering out pizza. So for my visit, I got dragged all over Sacramento for things like Morroccan and good Italian and Thai (not that I'm complaining!). Plus, we also talked a lot of cooking... and I got some great ideas for things to try (including how to make my great-great-grandmother's tomato gravy and biscuits).
Less than an hour until my flight and then I'll be home! I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again!
