Or what would probably more accurately be described as "pre-snow" -- it's that really fine stuff that's technically snow, but is barely there. Sort of the "light drizzle" of snow. We're supposed to get a few inches of the real stuff starting this afternoon, but it was still a bit of a shock to see this stuff floating down this morning. I'm just excited because it's been a few years since we've had any measurable snow here. Not an uncommon thing, really... although we happened to move to the area (wow, ten years ago next month!) just in time for the two worst winters in recent history, and even after all this time I still expect the weather to be like that and am surprised when we get no snow at all.

Hmmm... I need a good snow icon! Although speaking as someone who got dumped on back during the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption, ash can certainly double as extremely dirty snow... so the current icon actually kinda works.

ETA: It's now 11:35am and we have flakes! Big fluffy flakes! Nothing sticking to the ground yet, but I suspect it's only a matter of time.

ETA2: And ten minutes later it's starting to stick. Whee!!!

I *thought* I saw drizzles. I'm glad I'm not going crazy.

Last winter was our first winter here - didn't that second snowstorm count as appreciable? *is nervous* Hee.

Hmmm... I wonder if that happened while I was out of town (highly likely) or if it just didn't hit us here very hard.

1996 and 1997 were actually really, really BAD. They had roofs collapsing under the weight of the snow... electricity was out all over the place, and it wasn't any one big area, it was a bunch of little areas, making it harder to fix (we were without power for three days -- this is why we bought a house with a fireplace... we never wanted a house to get that cold again). Even worse, they had almost no way of plowing the roads of the nearly two feet of snow we had gotten. The whole area just closed down for a week at one point, because it was impossible to get anywhere except on skis.

The really funny part is that when we first moved into the house we had rented, everyone told us we should have just left our snow shovel with someone down in Utah, because we'd never need it here. Ha! About a month later, they were all wanting to borrow it!

I remember it specifically, it was the weekend of the 9th. Or that might have been the first one. It could have been the weekend after. Anyway, I remember that we had to shovel our driveway and I was surprised because the people we bought our house from had said they hadn't shoveled in like five years.

That is funny about your neighbors though. Hee.

I woke up to 4 inches or so of snow this morning here in IL. Well, I awoke to the sound of a snow plow, scraping at the pavement at an ungodly hour of the morning, and made the mental leap. ;)

On the one hand, it's wonderful to see you so happy.

On the other hand, I guess you don't have to drive.

...oh well, who cares? Be happy! I totally get it. A week ago it snowed one night, didn't stick to anything, but it was big gorgeous flakes and I felt so happy even when stuck in the very traffic created by the snow...

Well, I had planned on running down to Ikea (about 30 minutes south of here, with good traffic) but changed my mind when I saw the freeway... everyone going REALLY slow, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear there were several accidents today. Quite a few people around here have no clue how to drive in snow... and it really shows.

So, I took backroads up to Woodinville and went out for Thai food for lunch, instead. Maybe we'll see about hitting Ikea later tonight after everyone has gotten home and decided not to venture out again!

Ugh.

I have every confidence in gid's ability to drive in snow. But I have no confidence in the average Seattle driver's ability to do likewise. Getting up to see you guys this weekend could be potentially interesting.

Of course, this might all be moot if things warm up even a little bit tomorrow.

Yeah, the roads really haven't been that bad, but a lot of the drivers seem to be freaking out about it. Definitely take it easy on the way up tomorrow, since I've heard the bulk of this storm is hitting south of us.

I LOVE snow, as long as I don't have to drive in it. Love taking long walks in it, though.

That line from Gilmore Girls. "I smell snow!" It's SO true!

And if there had been any sort of energy in the atmosphere and just a wee bit colder temps, we could've had a lovely snow day here in Atlanta. The clouds look just like the clouds in New Hampshire, just before a light dusting.

This would, of course, have paralyzed Atlanta for three days. But it would've been pretty!

Ah, you're showing your age (*G*) if you can actually remember the eruption...

I was born three weeks later :P
