Thursday Night
Nov. 17th, 2005 08:35 pmLooks like we'll be staying home for Thanksgiving. Unless a miracle happens and they open all the lanes over Snoqualmie Pass early next week, there's no way I want to try dealing with the massive backups they're predicting (yeah, that 4 to 30 hours just doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs). We've already done that once... coming back from a Thanksgiving trip a few years ago there had been a ton of snow in the mountains, leading to avalanche control procedures and the traffic was backed up clear out to Cle Elum. Some fun was had, in that quite a few of us got sick of sitting in our cars, slapped on some gloves and got out to make snowmen off on the side of the road. However, it took us six hours to go from Cle Elum to Issaquah... for those who don't know the area, that's a little under 70 miles. I'm not eager to repeat the experience.
Polly is spending more and more time indoors and is getting more and more reluctant to go back out into the garage (this may be due, in large part, to the fact that the garage is not heated).
Today one of the neighborhood cats decided to pay a visit to our upstairs sliding glass doors. Zoe had absolute conniptions -- puffed up like a great big puffy thing and growled and yowled until I stepped closer to the door and scared the other cat away. I saw this as a good sign, because this is not how she acts around Polly... she still mostly just seems puzzled about all the spitting and hissing being thrown her way.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A -- or at least to exercise there. I've had a membership at the Pro Club up in Redmond through
rackham's work (he gets a free membership there, while mine is supposedly at a discounted rate). I used to go swimming there, once upon a time, but haven't gone in a few years... it's a 20-30 minute drive and, while the place itself is quite nice, it's really not a good fit for me. It's *too* nice, if that makes any sense -- kinda ritzy. I always felt horribly out of a place there... they also charge through the nose for the various classes and, believe it or not, they don't have an indoor walking track (why any large gym in this area wouldn't have *some* sort of walking track is beyond me).
The YMCA? Is 5-10 minutes away, is half the price, doesn't charge for classes (I'm already signed up for a cooking class on Monday... with some nutritionists from Bastyr University, yay!), is a really nice, clean facility, and they have a walking track! They also have an intro thing where I'll be meeting with a trainer to go over some of the machines and work up a workout... complete with followups over the next few weeks to tweak what I'm doing and make sure I'm using the machines correctly. All of that at no charge. They're all high tech, too, and have networked most of their machines... so I'll be punching in my personal code on a screen next to the machines which will then help me with my settings and will keep track of my progress. Very, very cool.
The walking track is rather cleverly done and I'm impressed with whoever designed the building... they've placed it on a balcony type area over one of the gyms. It's sloped for runners and has a spongy surface, a few workout machines tucked away in corners, a drinking fountain and several clocks. This is going to be the perfect way to get more of a workout during the winter when I really don't want to be out bikeriding.
Everyone else seemed to be doing it, so here's my nerd score:

Are we really terribly surprised by this?
