Old Toys, New Toys
Aug. 15th, 2003 09:20 pmI don't wear watches. Or, I should say, I haven't worn a watch since I was 14 and my wind-up Mickey Mouse watch quit working... the same watch I bought when I was six years old (it is, in fact, the very first thing I ever saved up money to buy). I'd taken it in to a watch repair place once, and been told that it would cost more to repair it than it was worth (except possibly for sentimental value). Of course, that's not taking into account my need for the not-so-cheap wind-up watches (I absolutely cannot wear a battery powered watch for more than a day... and it gets expensive and annoying to have to replace the batteries so often). At the time, I didn't have much money, so I put it back in my jewelry box and forgot about it.
Back in July I finally dug it out again and took it into the watch repair guy at the local Fred Meyer... he'd helped me fix my PDA last year when one of the screws fell out and I quite liked the guy (a Russian immigrant with a thick accent and a ready smile). He was going on vacation, so he wasn't able to get to it for a bit, which really wasn't a problem. Well, I got it back today, and it's beautiful... runs perfectly, and he'd even buffed up the glass to get rid of all the scratches. Now I just need to remember to wind it once a day.
The other big news is that we got our new cellphones yesterday... and we couldn't use them. The call center for activation is located in NYC, which meant the people who could help us were sweltering in the dark and probably trying to find ways to get home. But today, we were finally able to get the phones up and running, and have been spending the evening visiting various ringtone websites, trying to find just the right songs for our spiffy new toys. Oh, and frabjous day!!! I found a site (http://www.midiringtones.com) with the theme music for both BtVS and Angel!!! Though the best one I've found so far is the theme song from Futurama.
So, a good day all around... Especially since I've heard from all of my friends in the power-free areas and they're all doing okay (with varying degrees of frazzeledness).
