Yeah, it looks like I may have broken the little toe on my left foot.

I stubbed it rather severely on The Thing In My Trunk (which I'd left sitting out behind the computer desks -- it's since been moved) and at the time my first thought (before I'd had a chance to look at it -- I was still hopping around on my other foot, cursing old computer hardware and saying "Ow" a lot) was that I'd broken the toenail and driven it into the toe or something. Really sharp, hard pain.

I stayed off it for awhile and kept it propped up (easy to do, since I always prop my feet up when I'm on my computer), but when I got up to walk around awhile later, it still hurt and I couldn't put weight on it. After about four hours it still hadn't gotten any better and was a bit swollen (probably not as bad as it could have been because I'd kept it propped).

I finally decided to call my mom and step-dad (since he's a Physical Therapist and has worked as an EMT, he's usually got good advice on this sort of thing). He told me pretty much what I'd expected... if I went to the ER, I'd likely be sitting around there for four hours or so, they'd probably X-ray it, tape it up, give me some sort of
anti-inflammatory and then send me home.

So, I had [livejournal.com profile] rackham tape it for me when he got home, took some Advil, kept it iced and elevated and have stayed off it as much as possible. And it still hurts. Throbby pain, burning pain, and then there's sharp pain if I try to walk on it.

Assuming it's actually still hurting in the morning (which I'm betting it will be) I'm going to give my doctor's office a call and see if they can get me in. Not that they're likely to do much more for it than I've done, but I'd feel better if I got it checked out. I've never broken a bone before, so it's got me a little nervous.

In the meantime... ouch!!!!!

Oooohhhh! I'm so sorry. I feel your pain. I've dislocated my little toe - twice! Not only is it extremely painful, you can't walk! Such a tiny little toe, so much hassle...

Go to the doctor. You could have torn lingament (sp?), or broken a bone, etc... It's better to have it checked out, straightened out, and otherwise taken care of. You won't want to risk limping, right?

Ow! As one who has broken many a bone, I feel your pain! Try to stay off it as much as you can for the next couple of days. Unfortunately there's very little docs can do for a broken toe. :(

Bah. I don't envy you. Been through that like five different times for my little toes. I have a nasty habit of running my bare feet into things. :)

I hope you get to feelin' better soon.

Did you stub it before lunch? (I guess I didn't see you walk, so didn't notice if you were limping around then :-).

Oh, ow! As Strong Bad might say, that's not a good prize. You should have the doc take a look at it; you never know when you might need additional medical attention.

The Thing in the Trunk wants back in the trunk, apparently.

Nope, it was right after I got home from lunch. I essentially walked in the door, headed to my computer, and broke my toe. :-(

Yep, sounds like it might be broken (or have a hairline crack in it) to me...I fractured my big toe when one of my heels snapped off and sent me flying down the stairs, and the injury plagued me for months afterwards. So, I'm sending healing thoughts your way, and add my voice to the growing chorus: get thee to a doctor!

Poor toe! Poor fenchurche for being attached to the toe! Probably have broken it - my teenage daughter broke her toe the first time when she was about 6, she's broken 2 or 3 more since. After the first one we don't bother with the doctor or the accident department, but then as a ward nurse I did orthpaedics - we tend to go by the bruising - very obvious usually with a fracture. A&E usually Xray, go 'yep, broken,' and wrap a piece of padded metal strip up one side and down the other to splint it, or strap it firmly to the next toe to act as a support. We usually just do the strapping to the next toe thing for 4 - 6 weeks. Some A&Es don't even do that for a toe - if they don't, and it is painful, try it for your self when you get home - daughter dear says it makes it an awful less painful.

Yeah, they don't do much for broken toes unless it's the big one, but still, go just to be sure that's what it is. I hope you'll heal quickly. And do take something for the pain when needed, as oddly enough, you heal better when you don't hurt.
