As some of you know, we're getting our kitchen remodeled... originally, the contractor was going to come in next Monday to start his end of things. We'd set it up so that we would be doing the majority of the tearout of the old kitchen... it sounded like fun, at the time. Empty out the kitchen at our leisure all through this week, maybe tear out a few cupboards and such for fun, then we had a bunch of friends coming over Saturday morning for the big stuff, followed by a trip to the dump.

Well, the contractor called earlier today and they had a hole open up in their schedule and would like to get started a bit earlier... and as part of that, they'd go ahead and do the full tearout for us at no extra charge. On Wednesday. Which means we have tonight and tomorrow to pack up the entire kitchen -- [livejournal.com profile] rackham actually got a bit of a jump start on this last week while I was gone, but there's still a whole ton of crap to pull out of there. Earlier this year, I went through and tossed out the four year old boxes of Jell-O and mashed potato flakes and cereal and such... but there's still a lot of stuff we really don't need to keep. So, I'm also trying to winnow out the stuff that's easily replaceable (and how in the world did I wind up with three half empty bottles of white vinegar, anyway???).

This could be fun. And exhausting.

Only a few weeks ago, I was embarrassed to be confronted by my houseguest who, in a bid to prove herself useful while sponging off me shamelessly, had emptied out my kitchen cabinets of all the stuff with a sell by date of 1997 and earlier...but correct me if I'm wrong, isn't soup in tins meant to last till Judgment Day?

Congrats on the new kitchen, and good luck with the winnowing!

Thanks! And I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a packrat problem. I think the new kitchen will help quite a bit with that, at least on the theory that I'll be able to more easily see all the stuff we have stored, instead of having things crammed into hard to reach back corner spots where they get forgotten.
