Good Deed for the Day

Around 6:30 this evening, we headed into Duvall to go walking on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. On the way in, at the intersection of two major country roads, I spotted a young lady who looked to be late teens/early twenties, just standing around over near the bus stop. Lots of teenagers will get off the bus there (even though it really is in the middle of nowhere with absolutely nothing around it) and wait to be picked up by parents, so I didn't think much of it. Until we were driving home an hour later and I glanced over to see that same young woman still standing near the bus stop. So, we pulled over and I rolled down the window to ask if she was okay or if she needed a ride... and she burst into tears. She'd apparently taken the wrong bus, gotten off at that stop with the intention of catching the next bus back and it had never come. From what we were able to gather, she's new to the area so hadn't realized that Duvall was just a mile up the road (you really can't see it from that spot) and other than that, there's nothing for several miles along winding, hilly country roads and it was getting dark.

She'd actually tried to call a cab, but since all she had were cross-streets, they wouldn't come pick her up. She'd looked up walking directions on Google maps and it had estimated a three hour walk (and I'll tell you, I wouldn't want to try walking on those roads in the daytime, much less at twilight... 40+ mph traffic with limited visibility and no shoulder on the road at all) and it wouldn't have helped because her battery had run out. So, we drove her home and it turned out she lived about a ten minute drive away, just up the road from [personal profile] rackham's brother.

I was so very glad that I'd noticed her on the way in and again on the way back and that we both got the urge to stop and ask if she was okay. I can't even imagine how it must have felt to be stranded there with it getting darker and darker and have no idea how to get home.
