15 May - My name is Muerte!
May. 17th, 2014 09:31 pmOn Thursday, I managed to get a really good shot of Muerte on his new climbing stick.
I think I've mentioned that he's named after a character from the movie Undercover Blues, who keeps insisting his name is Muerte and that it means Death! All the while, the main characters persist in calling him Morty.

He's really quite sweet, although we haven't handled him much. We've been getting him used to us and he no longer runs and hides when we reach into the tank... and the other thing we've done is introduce him to the wonders of crickets. He'd never had any before we got him and we'd started looking into what we'd need to do to feed him live crickets, when we stumbled across a wonderful thing: Freeze-Dried Crickets! Yes, really! They're pre-gut-loaded with all the nutrients they need to pass on and are pre-treated with calcium powder. And what's more Muerte *loves* them. He'll eat those instead of his regular food, any time we put them in his tank.
I think someday we may still try giving him a few live crickets. All the reading I've been doing seems to indicate it's good for geckos to occasionally have to hunt their food and I can see why that would be the case (it's similar to why they recommend playing with your cats for a bit right before you feed them).
