We've had an automatic garbage can in the kitchen now for probably ten years or more... We replaced our first one when it died and, a few weeks ago, the second one quit working. We tried going with the no lid option for a bit, but finally decided we really needed to just get a new one... and best of all (at least according to the cats), it came in a really big box! Complete with crumpled paper! As Zoë would say, if she could speak English, "Squee!"
As it is, there were many happy chirrup noises coming from the box as she explored all the hiding places in the paper.
