5 March - Theater in the Basement
Mar. 6th, 2014 10:47 amI very nearly skipped ahead and posted this one yesterday... When we bought the house, we loved the huge room downstairs because we knew it would be perfect for building in a Library. We were pretty surprised when we saw that it also had a movie screen (powered to raise and lower to cover some windows... the ones where we just put in new blackout blinds, in an effort to make the room work better for what we want) and a rather nice, if old projection system. Well, the projector's bulb was way past its lifespan and needed replacing and, while it was top of the line when the previous owner bought it, the technology has advanced a LOT in the last few years (the old one had to be mounted on the other end of the room, meaning that half the room was unusable since it would block the projection on the screen). We did some searching and discovered we could replace the old projector with a really nice new one that will do 3D and is a short throw, meaning it can be mounted up close to the screen and not block anything (Rackham can NOT wait to get the Kinect hooked up to the new system). And, even better, the new projector would only be about twice what it would cost us to get a new *bulb* for the old system.
So, yesterday, the new projector arrived and Rackham cobbled everything together and set it up on a stool to give it a test run. And it. Was. AWESOME. And, of course, we had only one choice for the first movie to play on the new theater system...
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

The picture on the screen is a *whole* lot clearer than that... I just have no idea how to take this type of photo: low light, with a moving picture on the screen. You'll notice the projector is on a stool on the floor... this is VERY temporary. It's going to get mounted on the ceiling as soon as we get the chance. And, eventually, we'll have all those cables running through the walls or through conduits and not across the floor... but we really just wanted to get it up and running so we could see it!
The funny thing is, I remember going to a theater on Guam that had a screen smaller than this!
So, yes, we're a bit excited... this is the sort of thing that I don't think we would have ever thought to do on our own, but since the screen was already set up, it was too much to resist! And you can tell how excited I am, because I'm going to inflict more photos one you.
Rackham standing next to the screen in the dark, to give you an idea of its size. Plus, I managed to catch the movie in one of the few scenes where everyone is standing still.

And something Rackham has been positively itching to do... Play Xbox on the big screen... in this case LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.

I still need to see about getting some footage of it, but Zoƫ (our cat who already likes watching television) is absolutely riveted by the big screen... she would even start walking toward people on the screen when they appeared and then stop, sort of puzzled. It was really funny! I think the size of things is really confusing her.
