Busy Busy Busy
Jun. 14th, 2013 01:58 pmI just realized I haven't updated for awhile... in part, because life has been rather hectic. We sold our house in four days (it would have been faster, but we stated right up front that we'd be considering all offers the following Monday). We got 10 offers. o_O And ended up selling for significantly over our asking price... but that's one of the reasons we hired the agency we did. It's what they're known for.
Since then, it's been a mad scramble... we already had a good chunk of stuff moved out to a storage locker (for last minute remodeling and for staging the house), but we're down to the minutiae now which is always annoying. Last week the stager came and hauled away all of her stuff and the house just echoes, making it kinda weird to sleep in (it really doesn't feel like our house anymore and we both keep waking up to odd noises).
And then, just to make life extra fun, I headed out of town last Tuesday for my annual trip to JadeCon (and Origins Game Fair). I'd been planning this trip for a year, but I was so tempted to cancel. I've been having fun and I'm glad I decided to go through with it, but I'm feeling incredibly guilty for leaving all the last minute stuff to
rackham (plus, I know it's got to make the house feel even emptier). I'll fly home next Tuesday night, we get the keys to the new house on Wednesday and we have to be out of the old house by 9:00pm on Thursday. Whew. Gonna have to hit the ground running. So, while having wild and crazy fun at JadeCon, I've also been guzzling Emergen-C and trying to get out to go walking (and Geocaching) every day... in the hopes that I can ward off any potential Con Crud. Because I really won't have time to deal with it when I get back.
Oh! Before I go... a fun story! How I came to get a ticket to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in concert and ran into an old high school friend I haven't seen in 17+ years.
So, for this trip I actually flew into Louisville and stayed the night at
nmissi's house... then hit the road heading up to Columbus (it's only a few hours and I was able to find a few Geocaches along the way). I decided to swing into the last rest area before Columbus to check for Geocaches and when I pulled up, I spotted a whole passel of LDS Missionaries. Being Mormon, myself, I walked up and said "Hey Elders!" (Seriously, missionaries love being recognized.) We got to chatting about why we were on the road to Columbus (me from Seattle, them from, I think, Cincinnati) and that's when I found out the MoTab was performing in Columbus that night. Then one of the Elders said "Hey, we had someone not show up to go, so we've got an extra ticket. Would you like it?" and I figured, why not?
So, it turned out that the venue was a block and a half from my hotel. Bonus! I walked over a bit early and got up to the top floor (since the ticket was up in the nosebleed section) and handed it to the usher who then asked if I was there by myself. When I said I was, he asked if I'd like a better seat and handed me a different ticket... in the section just off the floor, right up near the stage!
The concert was *amazing*. The choir is even better in person (which I'd always suspected) and partway through the first section of music, I realized I was pretty sure I recognized a guy in the choir... the husband of my old high school friend, K. So I was racking my brain, trying to remember if I'd heard he was in the MoTab these days. At intermission, I checked my email and had a message from my high school friend's sister L (who is actually also a good friend) that yes, he was indeed there. Wow! Can't believe I actually recognized him from that distance!
After the performance was over, I checked my email again to discover a private message from L again, saying that not only was her brother-in-law in the choir, but her sister K was traveling with the choir and was there too! I wrote back that I'd keep an eye out, but doubted I'd see her with so many people... and probably about a minute later, there she was. Gave her a huge shock though, since she was NOT expecting to see me at all. Like I said, we hadn't seen each other in over 17 years... not since I'd moved up to the Seattle area. And when you consider that we knew each other from a small high school in the middle of nowhere in northeastern Washington, it's not exactly likely that we'd run into each other in Columbus, Ohio! Later, she said she realized we should have had someone take our picture together... but I'm sorta glad we didn't. I was in jeans and a t-shirt (typical convention-wear, not concert-going clothes) with no make-up, since I'd spent the day mostly driving.
It was just one of those days of maximum synchronicity.
And in other news, I also got to donate blood today at the convention. I love it when cons have blood drives! And hey, free t-shirt!
