fenchurch | Embarrassing realization

Earlier today, I solved and found a Puzzle Cache named "It Happens Every Summer." As a consequence, I've had the USO Day Camp theme song from my childhood absolutely stuck in my head. I should explain that when we moved to Guam, I had just turned six years old and every summer until we moved back to the States, I went to USO Day Camp out on a beach somewhere in the middle of the island. It was a lot of fun... we would go swimming, do crafts, learn to weave things out of coconut leaves, make sand candles, sing songs, play games. You know the sort of thing.

Well, USO Day Camp had its own camp song, the first line of which starts "It happens every summer..." so you can see why it would come up. This evening, as I was explaining this to

rackham, I sang the song for him, which is when it hit me...

I'd been singing one line wrong, this whole time. Now, I will say that I always thought the line was weird, but I couldn't quite think of what other word would fit at the end of the line. Anyway, here's the song in its entirety (and yes, it's exactly the sort of song you'd expect of a daycamp not affiliated with a youth organization... and is even a bit non-PC by today's standards).

It happens every summer, tall or fat or slim.
The kids all come to Day Camp, to have some fun and swim.
We learn about each other and how we all can be,
Sisters come with brothers, kids like you and me.

We learn about the water and how to make it fun,
We learn about our island: its flowers, its trees, its sun.
So let's all make it happen, (This is the bit I had wrong, see below)
We'll have a lot of fun at USO Day Camp!

So, the way I always heard it and always sang it was: "So let's all make it happen, sunny days are damp." And yeah, it never made a bit of sense to me... even when I was six years old. I used to try to find other words that would fit instead of damp, but nothing I came up with would rhyme with "camp."

Then this evening, while singing it to Rackham... it hit me. "So let's all make it happen, sunny days OR damp."

*blink*blink*

*headdesk*

So, 35 year old mystery now solved. Not sure why it never occurred to me before, but I actually felt almost relieved after finally figuring it out. Relieved and just a bit stupid. :-p
