fenchurch: (Dresden Cover)

My copy of Ghost Story arrived while I was still down in Utah... meaning I had to wait until I got home before I could start (I'd actually considered canceling my order from Amazon and buying it on the road, but it didn't occur to me soon enough to stop the shipment). And, I must confess, I still haven't read Side Jobs and I know there's at least one story in there that relates to the events in this book (although at this point, I'm guessing it isn't particularly necessary to have read it before reading the new book). Kinda glad I had this to read when I got back, though, since I'm apparently in the throes of fighting off something icky... dancing on the edges of being sick, but managing to mostly keep it at bay while still feeling blah.

When I finished reading Changes, I hoped there was going to be a sequel... but even after I heard there would be, I couldn't help but think of an old Smothers Brothers skit. You know, the bit where one of them ends up rambling in a confusing way until ending with "Take it!" and the other brother says, perplexed, "Take it where?!" I knew I wanted more Dresden, but seriously... take it where?

And now, with Ghost Story, we know.

I must admit, it felt really good to be back in the Dresdenverse, especially after the way things ended in the last book. It had been surprisingly painful to watch Harry essentially get killed off by pieces until there was really nothing left... more so than if it had been a sudden thing, because it wasn't just death of the character, it was death of everything that represented the character. So, yeah, I really wanted to see more with him... to hopefully clear a bit of that from my mind.

The story here was interesting and had a few twists I didn't see coming, but was a bit more predictable than I would have liked... I pretty much guessed the "ending" within a the first chapter or so of the book (not the climax, but rather the denouement). There were a number of things in the book that seemed almost over-the-top silly (but no more so than some of the outright meta moments in Proven Guilty) and at least one spot where there was a paragraph that was almost a word for word repeat of a paragraph from earlier in the book (the sort of thing you would expect to pop up perhaps in two different books in a series, trying to fill in the reader on the same pertinent background info... all I can think is that it somehow escaped the proofreaders).

But overall, I liked it and I'm now insanely interested in seeing where he takes things from here... even though it's not the same "take it where?!?" sort of ending. Because Harry really did manage to work himself into a tight situation, but also seems to have given himself more wiggle room than I would have expected. The thing that I'm almost more curious about is how he's going to relate to the friends and family he left behind... because there was a good deal of closure with them in this book, and yet he's most likely going to have to interact with them again. I can't wait to see what happens.
