No, not *headdesk*. That would hurt too much.

Tuesday morning, I woke with a very sore neck. I figured I must have *REALLY* slept on it wrong... but it didn't go away like I expected and when I woke up Wednesday morning, it was even a bit worse. I made an appointment for a massage and that definitely helped... and then I went home and used the thermaphore (a heating pad type thing that mimics wet heat) on the neck and shoulder, which felt fantastic. And that was just the latest in a series of really stupid moves, because when I woke up this morning, it was even WORSE.

I know this feeling... even though it's been awhile since I last had it. It's whiplash. And, thinking back on it, I know exactly how I got it. Way back on our second day in Florida, we went on the Shuttle Launch Simulator at the Kennedy Space Center. Not really all the bad, as far as those sorts of rides go... but at one point while we were in the actual "launch" portion of the ride, I lifted my head to look at something to the side. I remember there was a sharp pain in my neck and I had a few twinges later that day, but it seemed to go away after that... until I went on the Aerosmith Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios (and I should mention, it wasn't really the ride that caused me problems, but the tension I had built up about going on it).

It was pretty sore over the next few days, but seemed to have gone away by the time we got home. So, what changed? Well, on Monday I was picking some stuff up at CostCo and marveling at the fact that I could now lift 40 pounds with one arm! And, I was sort of showing off for myself: Look! 40 pounds! One hand! (It really wasn't all that long ago that I couldn't lift 40 pounds using both hands.) There were a few twinges at that point and the next morning, I woke up not really being able to move my neck.

The massage I got on Wednesday? Good idea! The heat I applied afterward? Stupid idea! Whiplash is essentially a sprain... and is actually best treated with cold. I've been taking ibuprofen and using one of my therapy ice packs on it every few hours today, and I've gone from being barely able to move my upper body when I woke up, to almost having full range of motion.

So, basically, through a series of stupid moves on my part, I managed to give myself whiplash and then exacerbate it when it was probably nearly gone, then make it even worse right after getting proper treatment for it. Bleh.

I've got an appointment with a doctor later this afternoon to see if I can get any other suggestions on treatment, but I suspect the advice I've gotten from my step-dad (who is a physical therapist) is probably the best.

Sometimes it's the little things that provide that last straw to big hurtings. Hope you're feeling better now ...
