fenchurch: (St. Helens)

We've just been upgraded from a "Notice of Volcanic Arrest" (no, I'm not kidding, that's really what they call it) to a "Volcano Advisory." There's only one level higher... I believe it's called something along the lines of "Whoop, There It Goes!"

Basically, the current tremors are increasing in frequency and strength and they suspect an eruption of some sort may be imminent.

My mom called a few minutes ago and we were reminiscing about the last time St. Helens blew... and chuckling a bit over my step-dad's reaction to the current news. He'd just called her, all frantic because of the rise in the alert status and wondering if they have all the stuff they'd need and whether he should come home right away. She told him not to worry just yet and that she was at the store at that very moment and would be picking up the chips and soda. :-p (What can I say, it's a tradition.)

Turns out my step-dad has never been in a natural disaster before, so he's all jittery about the idea... my mom and I have been in way too many, and are probably a little too laid back about the experience.

To be honest, even if St. Helens were to blow in a big and mighty way (i.e. the way it did on May 18th, 1980), [livejournal.com profile] rackham and I are not likely to be affected at all. My mom, on the other hand, is probably in the path of any ash cloud (she's in Eastern Oregon). This has gotten me thinking, though, that I still haven't finished using the Museum Putty on all the knick-knacks in the house... I think I'm only about halfway done.

Well, jolly good. Finally headed back to the PNW, and the entire North American section of the Ring of Fire appears to be doing the tectonic tango. Though as far as I can tell, our upcoming location probably won't be affected (unless we start getting quakes rumbling up from Cali).

Mutta mutta.
