I was replying to someone about this show over on
sockkpuppett's LJ and realized that I was getting a bit too wordy. So, I trimmed it down for that entry and decided I'd bring the whole thing here.
rackham and I ended up watching all of "The Event" last night but I'm not sure it's enough to hook us into watching every week. For the most part, we found it to be needlessly confusing with the timeline -- it jumps around constantly, with each new scene saying things like "Five months earlier" and "Ten days later" without being terribly clear what it was earlier and later than... the previous scene? The first scene? What?
Also, we got really tired of so many characters knowing things that aren't being shared with the audience. And yeah, it's part of the mystery and all, but to have so many characters acting in accordance with information being deliberately (and sometimes awkwardly) withheld... gets old really fast. And it seems that the whole series is based around that premise, so I doubt it's going to get any better.
I also have a hard time seeing how they're going to be able to keep this up for more than a season... and it may have been smarter to just do what they do in Britain and go with an extended mini-series format (maybe do 12 episodes and call it good).
All that being said, the last scene did pique my interest... but since I don't expect to have any answers anytime soon, I'm not sure how much I want to bother being strung along. I'll probably end up finding online forums where people who do watch the show discuss what happens, so I can get the gist of it without having to waste an hour.
