Our new place is out in the country a bit... not too far from several towns or from
rackham's work, but far enough that we're surrounded by pastoral settings. Just up the road from us is some land that's actually owned by the state (from what we understand, it used to be a prison farm, once upon a time) that gets leased out to farmers every year. This last year they were growing corn (and one night we happened to be driving by and got to see the combine start in on harvesting it... so cool!), but left a few rows standing after harvesting for some reason. It took me way longer than it should have to figure out that they were there for the hunters (going after pheasant), but after that particular season ended and the hunters went away, a flock of another kind descended. The farmers had planted something else (I think it might be winter wheat, but I'm not positive), so the fields are nice and green... making the new arrivals stand out even more. I'd originally assumed that they were just here on their way south, but it's looking like those fields may be their usual winter home! Squee!
