Amusement at lunch
Sep. 17th, 2013 04:24 pmI had to swing by Costco today (fill the gas tank, check to see if they had Claritin (they didn't)) and decided to throw caution to the wind and grab some lunch there. I settled in the little seating area right next to a mom with several young kids... the younger boy was deeply engrossed in a rollicking game of repeating everything his older brother said (which was obviously driving said older brother crazy). Then he happened to glance over at me and his eyes got big and he said, in a rather awed voice "Purple hair!!" Hee! His older brother looked relieved for a bit, until the younger one picked up the previous game where he'd left off.
Around that time, their sister (who looked to be between the other two in age) squealed "A bird! A bird!!" Sure enough, as often happens, a small brown bird was hopping around on the floor behind me, well inside the building and showing absolutely no fear. Older brother took this opportunity to shout his encouragement "Go step on it, Isabelle!" (although apparently knowing better than to try it himself) which was immediately repeated by younger brother (who then looked at me again and shouted "Purple hair!" before returning to being a mimic). Mom was calmly eating her lunch through all this and was just finishing up when the little girl again squealed "A bird!" trying to get her mom to get excited about it, too... followed again by older brother encouraging her to go step on it and little brother echoing him. Mom rolled her eyes and advised them that they wouldn't be able to step on it, because the bird would move too fast and that it wasn't a nice thing to do anyway. She gathered up her stuff and the kids and headed out... and I don't think I've laughed that much through a meal in a very long time.
