The Great Lactose Experiment Continues
Jul. 6th, 2013 02:13 pmIn case you've forgotten the first part of the experiment: http://fenchurch.dreamwidth.org/233161.html
I'd sort of put things on hold over the last month or so. With all the traveling I was doing and then the big move, I really couldn't afford to spend time dealing with a bad reaction. I have, however, been taking Digestive Advantage Lactose Defense every day (per the suggestion of a Lactose Intolerant friend) and letting it build up in my system.
While I was in Ohio, though, I got the chance to further my testing in possibly the best way... first by eating something with milk in it when I had absolutely no suspicion it was in there and then eating the same thing later after I found out (it was a chicken salad sandwich... I'd assumed it was simply made with mayo when I got it the first time and found out by accident when I went to order it the next day that they added yogurt to the mix to make it extra creamy). No reaction either time! Of course, I also had no idea exactly how much dairy was in the chicken salad, so not quite as effective a test as it could have been.
Well, yesterday I decided it was time. We were standing in line at the grocery store and I spotted the display of Heath bars. I love those things and haven't had one in over three years... so I bought one and split it with
rackham, first taking a Lactaid for extra insurance. And hallelujah, no reaction!!! Not even slightly clogged ears!
This does not mean I'll be consuming cow's milk all willy nilly. I'll be continuing with goat's milk and sheep's milk options for cheese and using rice milk or hemp milk when I cook... and just avoiding cow's milk whenever possible. But it's nice knowing I don't have to worry so much about accidentally ingesting cow's milk and having to suffer through a reaction. And if I really, REALLY want something with cow's milk (*cough*dark chocolate hot fudge sundae from Ghirardelli's*cough*), it should be okay to indulge once in awhile without having to worry about getting really sick!
