Visiting my grandma
May. 31st, 2013 09:52 pmEarlier this week I headed across the state to go visit my grandma. I'd been meaning to get over there for ages, but things just kept coming up (weather or house-selling stuff, mostly). I'm so very glad I went. She's got terminal cancer and is receiving hospice care while living at my aunt's place... she's on some heavy-duty pain meds and if you try talking to her right after she's taken them, well, she's really not there. But if you catch her later, then she's as chatty as ever and still very much herself.
( I bought a Kindle Fire to give her )
I had a moment, though, when I left... I'd said goodbye because she was about to fall asleep and then had gone to pack my car, but she'd told me to stop back by and wake her up before I actually hit the road. I'm so glad I did, because she gave me a big hug and I got to tell her I loved her and she told me she loved me, and it hit me... that might be the last time I ever see her. I'm not sure if it would have hit me as hard if I hadn't just lost my dad such a short time ago. And I'm just so happy I got to have that moment with her, because I didn't get the chance with him.
Onto a cheerier subject... ( the drive over and the drive back were incredibly gorgeous! )
