We made it home from Colfax on Friday night without any problems, weather or otherwise. Thankfully, it turned out that the front we'd been expecting had been delayed by a day... but we still woke up this morning to a surprising light blanket of snow (a preview of what was to come), which rapidly melted away with the sun. The new forecast was for snow between about 3pm and 9pm, so we decided that if we were going to actually get anything done, it would have to be early... so, off to the post office with two boxes I'd intended to get mailed off about two weeks ago -- one to my sis-in-law for her birthday (belated) and one to
nmissi and the boys, which really should have been there by today to be effective. Hmph. I guess I should feel relieved that I'm only about two weeks behind now, since I was running around two months behind, back after the accident.
Then it was up to CostCo to fill up the car and to do our annual toy-buying spree for Toys For Tots. CostCo is best place to get that sort of stuff... because they tend to sell things in packs, so you'll get a toy and a bunch of accessories all bundled together for a really nice price. We ran home to drop some stuff off and by the time we headed back out to the car, the snow had started and was already coming down hard... at around 1:30 (the weather forecasting folks really had no clue how this storm was going to go -- it's still snowing at 11:30pm). Then off to Factoria Mall, where there was a big Toys For Tots event... I love dropping off a pile of toys to actual Marines (rather than just at a toy drop bin), it's one of the best parts of the Holiday season... Marines in dress uniforms accepting toys and donations and everyone happy and taking a break from the hustle and bustle.
The really funny part is that when we arrived at the mall, the parking lot was PACKED. We parked waaaaay out, and still had some trouble finding a spot. But the crowds in the mall seemed awfully small when we finally got in and when we dashed into Goldbergs' Famous Delicatessen for a late lunch, the place was almost empty. Very weird, since it's almost always packed, especially on a Saturday afternoon. Rackham had a Reuben and I had what he termed a "Young Reuben" (corned beef, swiss, russian dressing and coleslaw on rye -- it was YUMMY), plus a side order of potato latkes, which neither of us had ever eaten before and have decided we really liked. Of course, then we glanced out a window and noticed that the snow was still really coming down and was starting to stick to the road. By the time we got back to our car, half the parking lot was empty (apparently, half the people had fled the mall the moment we stepped into it!).
We took our time getting home since we were worried about the roads and, more importantly, the other drivers.
tomte came up with the perfect description of local drivers when they encounter snow: "Imagine legions of insane, drunken zombies who have each had a pot of espresso. Now imagine that most of them somehow got drivers' licenses." Hee! It turned out not to be a problem, since it looked like nearly everyone was staying home... which we've done, as well, after we got back to the house. We'd originally been planning on attending a wedding reception, but it was in downtown Kirkland and there was no way we were going to try driving on four inches of snow and ice with lots of hills and no snowplows to be seen. We have, understandably I think, turned into complete wimps when it comes to driving on snow and will avoid it whenever possible.
( Anyway, some obligatory snow photos under the cut )
So, 3.5 inches at that point, with a bit more snow afterward... although it's already starting to mix with freezing rain, leading to large clumps of very heavy snow dropped sporadically from the trees onto our roof, treating us to very loud, random "THUMPS" -- it's going to be a fun night.
Tomorrow will be even better... Supposedly, more freezing rain mixed with occasional snow and some high winds tossed in for good measure. And Monday? More of the same. Only with stronger winds. Joy.
