fenchurch: (Winter Frosty Strawberries)
We ended up not having a guest overnight, last night... [livejournal.com profile] mekle stuck around for dinner and a bit of Xbox before deciding to brave the roads. The timing turned out to be perfect -- almost no one was left on the roads, but the freeway was still relatively clear of ice from the earlier traffic and it hadn't had time to refreeze, so he made it home in pretty good time and without any problems.

[livejournal.com profile] rackham and I decided to take advantage of the empty roads and what we thought was the end of the snow to run out to Safeway (we realized we needed some bread and milk). You know, you put chains on a MINI Cooper and those suckers can go just about anywhere!

I'd assumed we were done with the snow for the evening, but it started up again not long after we got home, dumping another four inches or so on top of the hail/ice layer and the compacted snow layer... I really wish we had a nice camera, though, because it was absolutely stunning last night. We had that icy layer covering everything, the bamboo and trees in the backyard all weighted down with snow and ice, big fat flakes falling from the sky and a dim orange glow to everything (from the city lights reflecting off the low cloud layer, the snow-covered trees and the snowy ground). Just breathtaking!

Needless to say, Rackham stayed home today and did a bit of work remotely (there were only a handful of people in his group who actually made it into the office today, and most of them were the ones who live right near campus). Around 4:00 or so I'd had enough of being trapped in the house (I really have developed a VERY low tolerance for being forced to stay home... I blame the broken shoulder that trapped me here for several weeks last year), so we climbed into the MINI again (since the chains were still on, it was an easy choice to make) and decided to try for Safeway, figuring the route to Trader Joe's was likely to be messy.

In reality, the roads were messy EVERYWHERE (cut to spare my flist). )

There's still a few inches of ice on the roads... and considering it didn't really get much above freezing today and it's going to be well below tonight, I suspect things won't be much better tomorrow. I snapped a few photos last night and this morning that I'll see about posting separately (to spare those on my flist who are on dialup).

In other news: Well, Knights of Prosperity didn't last very long for me... they're just trying way too hard, which makes the humor almost painful to watch. I stopped this week's episode about ten minutes in and deleted it from the DVR. Still, it was kinda fun seeing the guy who played Scully's jerk of an old FBI Academy classmate playing a comedic role. OTOH, In Case of Emergency continues to amuse me... the writing isn't bad and I think it helps that they've got a really good cast. Plus, we're talking about characters from the Class of 1987, so there's an automatic appeal for me.
