Greetings from Spokane (sort of)
Aug. 6th, 2005 03:24 pmJust a quick update as I've managed to grab a teeny bit of computer time. Okay, technically I've had a lot of computer time, mostly because
rackham and I have been doing our standard vacation activity of fixing other people's computers. :-p
We ended up not getting out of the Seattle area until about 7:00pm last night (which was probably a good thing, since I gather the traffic was horrible before then and it likely would have taken us that long even if we'd left earlier). So, we stayed the night at the Holiday Inn Express in Moses Lake, even though that left us only two hours or so from my dad's place. It was getting close to 10:00 and we decided we'd rather stay somewhere with wi-fi.
My dad's internet setup is rather interesting, since they live about 40 minutes or so north of Spokane out in the middle of nowhere (for those who know the area, he's just north of the Pend O'Rielle County border, not far off Highway 2). No ordinary broadband available out here... he's got satellite internet. Very strange, because it's incredibly fast, but there's a latency issue. So you send something out, there's a pause, and then it all comes tumbling in very, very quickly.
We're here for a family reunion... it's just not *our* family reunion. My dad remarried about two years ago, and this is a reunion for my step-mom's family. It's not as bad as it sounds, since I get along really well with her, and I've spent a bit of time around her brothers and their families. Still, it's a little weird being around a bunch of people who are all related to each other and don't have a clue who you are.
Even worse, it's FRIGGIN' HOT here. Laugh all you want, but 99 degrees is way more than we're used to (I'm looking with longing at the high of 78 we're supposed to be having back home, even though I know if I were there, I'd think that was hot, too).
With any luck, it will cool down enough later that we can go bikeriding... especially since we went to all the trouble of hauling the bikes here from the other side of the state. We're thinking of trying the Spokane River Centennial Trail if we can find a good starting place on it. And, you know, if it's not too hilly. We're still just starting out with this cycling thing, and even small hills can easily defeat us.
