Geek Mecca

About a year ago, someone at my husband's work stumbled across some zoning plans from a Renton City Council meeting... and one of the buildings outlined in what was then an old Boeing parking lot really got his attention. So, he sent the info out on one of the company's geek related forums and ever since then, my husband and I have been watching that spot of ground.

Slowly, a building appeared, looking very much like what we were hoping it would be... but with no sign on the front indicating what store was moving into the space. On Friday, my husband IM'd me from work, all excited because a co-worker had just called from his cellphone to say that the sign had finally gone up, and it was true -- we're getting a Fry's Electronics.

*Numfar! Do the Dance of Extreme Geek Joy!*

If you're a geek and have never been into Fry's, you're definitely missing out... We go to the one outside Riverside, CA every time we're visiting my sister-in-law and have been known to drive down just south of Portland solely to go to the fairly lame Fry's there (the building wasn't designed for the store and is a bit on the small side).

It's a store with tech, tech, and more tech. They carry computers, accessories, software, tech toys, entertainment system components... and if you're really into the geek thing, they even carry the bits and pieces you need to BUILD that stuff from the ground up -- it's a robotics hobbyists dream. Probably sounds like a dozen other stores, but it's a matter of scope. Fry's carries nearly EVERYTHING. The stores are huge, usually themed (the one outside Riverside has a mockup of the Space Shuttle), and they tend to hire people who actually know what they're talking about.

I have no clue when our Fry's will be opening -- the exterior of the building is done, as is the parking lot and the landscaping around the building and through the lot -- but I feel like a kid before Christmas. Or, perhaps more appropriately, I feel like a kid who just discovered they've built a Wonka factory down the street.
