Yes, we did make it home!
Dec. 14th, 2008 10:43 pmI just realized I hadn't updated here since we got back! We finally arrived home around 4:30, having left Portland right around 11:00 -- we did stop for lunch, but still, it's normally a three hour drive and it took us five and a half. As I mentioned, the roads in Portland were awful and I was incredibly happy we had chains (seriously, I've NEVER heard of them requiring chains in the city before, but they were very necessary). It really was quite bizarre, though, getting over the bridge on the Columbia River and having the snow suddenly clear up almost entirely.
The roads were really good, heading north out of Vancouver... until just outside Centralia, where we suddenly hit near white out conditions that lasted all the way through Olympia and into south Tacoma. Overall, we were actually a bit relieved, because the road conditions website had indicated the entire route was supposed to be that bad... we ended up making much better time than I thought we would because of that clear stretch.
And then north of Tacoma it cleared up again... by the time we got to our house, we could even sort of see the sun! Just wild. Apparently, the snow was following us north, but veered off a bit to west, so Seattle got some new snow but we didn't here in Kirkland. It's just cold -- we're supposedly expecting the worst extended cold snap since 1990 this week. Guess who won't be going outside much!
On the bright side, there was a note on our door when we got home from our next door neighbors, letting us know they were spending the day baking cookies and we should swing by sometime in the evening to visit and partake of baked holiday goodness. And oh... they were yummy. I'm beginning to think we're not going to get any of our own baking done this year, though. I just don't think we're going to have the time.
