Spending time in Idaho Falls
Sep. 16th, 2008 08:45 pmI am *so* glad I decided to drive out here, even if I wasn't needed right away to help my grandmother out at home. She looked so relieved when she found out that someone would still be in town for at least a few more days into her hospital stay...
She's doing really well, but still has a huge recovery ahead of her. I'll be heading home in a few days, simply because I'm going to need to come back out here when she eventually is released, at least for a week or so, until she's well enough to travel to my aunt's place... and I'd really like to be home for a little while.
The worst part about staying here, though, is that my internet options are REALLY limited. We pay for my grandma to have dial-up internet access (which she likes, but barely uses), but that means her computer is woefully behind on updates... meaning that every time I connect on her machine, it's exceedingly slow because it's trying to download some update or other. The dialup connection I have for my laptop isn't working for some reason I haven't been able to fathom (you know, once upon a time, I was good at modems... I could rattle of AT codes without blinking an eye and tell you exactly what each one did -- ah, the joys of being a SysOp). So, I'm left with using my phone, which is great, as far as it goes. But it's not the most efficient way to do internet stuff. I did discover that there's free wi-fi here at the hospital, out in the lobby areas, so I'll be dragging my laptop up here with me over the next few days (right now, this is mostly inconvenient because it's about 9:45 local time and I still haven't had a chance to get dinner -- so I'm faced with the ultimate in geek conundrums: food or internet. So far, internet is winning).
The majorly sad news is that my absolute most favorite Idaho Falls restaurant went out of business about a month ago (business wasn't good at the new location, so the owner decided it was a good time to retire). No more Aussie Eats! No more delicious meat pies. No more lamingtons. No more pavlova. Unless I make them myself, of course. I was able to assuage my sorrows a little bit by the discovery of the London Cafe... serving British food in downtown Idaho Falls!!! Even better, they make their own curry sauce and it's WONDERFUL. I indulged myself with a plate of fish and chips with peas... all smothered in curry sauce. YUM!!!
It's not the same though. :-(
Anyway, because of the lack of internet, I'm woefully behind on my friendslist and I don't think I'll be getting caught up any time soon. I'm just glad I found a place where I *can* get online, even if it's not the most convenient of locations.

Date: 2008-09-17 06:34 am (UTC)Sorry to hear about Aussie Eats.
There's a nice Chinese restaurant downtown where we usually eat. It's always been yummy so far.
Also this time of year there's a farmer's market with nice ripe tomatoes and peaches along with the usual fun.

Date: 2008-09-18 12:16 am (UTC)And I'm right there with you on the tomatoes and peaches! I picked up some peaches from a roadside stand and have been eating the tomatoes from my grandmother's plants in the backyard! A very nice treat, considering our summer back home wasn't long enough this year for our tomato plants to properly mature.
I found out there's a Cajun restaurant up in Roberts, but it's only open for dinner, so I probably won't get a chance to go until I come back into town in a few weeks.

That's where it is. An easy two block walk to the park on the river with your take-out. Happy's on Park maybe? That's the one.
