Sep. 4th, 2008 09:34 pmMmm.... dinner tonight was Young Reuben sandwiches (corned beef, swiss and cole slaw with a bit of Russian dressing on rye) with sweet potato fries (one of these days, I'm going to figure out how to make these without burning half of them). Quite yummy! I get cravings for Young Reubens from time to time... and no, that's probably not their actual name, but it makes sense when you think about cole slaw being, sort of, unaged sauerkraut.
I still haven't seen the season premiere of "Bones." I recorded it last night, but still haven't mustered up any sort of enthusiasm for it... they've got a lot to make up for, after last season, and I just can't see how they're going to be able to manage it. Not only that, but the previews I saw for the premiere quite simply look silly. Not an encouraging sign. I think I'm secretly wanting to stay living in the world where there's still a chance they won't totally blow it... and once I see the premiere, there's too great a chance it'll be shattered. Just call me Schrödinger.
I'm constantly being freaked out by the size of clothing I'm wearing. I keep pulling out my new shirts and thinking "there is no freakin' way this thing will even go over my head, much less be wearable." And then I put it on and it fits nicely. Really, really weird. It's been harder than I thought to dump my old clothes... I've had to put everything on and determine that yes, I am in fact *swimming* in that old shirt/pair of pants/dress/skirt before I'll put it on the Donation pile. And even then, the piles will stick around for a week until I get the gumption up to take them to the Donation Trailer. I'm very quickly moving into the last of my ancient "thin" clothes... and considering I still have another 45 pounds to go, I suspect there will be more shopping in my future. Blech. I just wish I could get by with what I have until I'm done losing, and then I can go out and completely replace my wardrobe just once and be done with it!
In a related moment... last week, someone recommended checking out thrift stores for clothing as a cheap way of getting stop-gap outfits. I felt a bit stupid for not thinking of it myself, to be honest. However, I'm not sure it was such a good idea... I hit the big Goodwill store in Bellevue earlier this week and ended up coming home with no clothing (I couldn't find anything I liked), but with a huge armload of cookbooks instead. *headdesk*
I've recently discovered the show Middleman and I think I'm in love... a show chock full of pop culture references, SF&F references and ultra-snappy dialogue? *swoon* I really wish I'd given it a try earlier in the season. Now I just have to hope they start rerunning episodes when the season ends!
Lastly, a very big THANK YOU to
spikereader for coming up with the answer to my card game question... it turns out we've been playing a variation on the game Golf!

Date: 2008-09-05 05:37 am (UTC)I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I tried watching some of the Bones premiere last night after the convention wrapped up. Honestly, it didn't hold my interest and I turned off the DVR after the first hour. Everything just seemed "off".

Date: 2008-09-05 06:25 am (UTC)Re: Goodwill: well, that's always the risk with the thrift store. Go for x, come home with a new bookshelf/crockpot/armload of books etc.

Date: 2008-09-05 07:02 am (UTC)After thinking that was sort of disturbing, I went back and read again and realized you were talking about Reubens.
My favorite way to make a Reuben is with corned beef I've slow cooked myself and sliced. I've never gotten into the cole slaw thing, though. I like them with sauerkraut and dijon mustard rather than Russian dressing. (On pumpernickle.)
I love sweet potato fries, but like you, I haven't mastered the temperature/time combination to get them to come out cooked but not burned.

Date: 2008-09-05 11:01 am (UTC)As for sweet potato fries? I've never had a problem with them burning. I bake them at lower temps than I do yellow potatoes. Maybe that's your issue? I'll usually put them in at 325.

Date: 2008-09-05 03:35 pm (UTC)And I am tuning in after only watching the first 9 episodes of Season One and a couple of episodes to catch me up on the action in Season Three.
I have borrowed Seasons One and Two, and I'm playing catch-up.

Date: 2008-09-05 03:50 pm (UTC)I've had to donate a bunch of my old clothes lately too, but for the opposite reason as you. O_o

Date: 2008-09-05 05:07 pm (UTC)Clothes dilemmas like yours are good ones to have though, and finding you can fit into clothes you last wore years ago is fantastic. I've been overeating like crazy lately, so its back to Points counting for me on Monday, as I can't afford to buy a whole new winter work wardrobe.
Glad I was able to help with the card game. :)

Date: 2008-09-06 01:05 am (UTC)Unfortunately the "middle wardrobe" is necessary... I had a pair of "first lost weight" pants I think I wore three times before they got "too big."
