Home and gone again
Aug. 7th, 2008 09:36 amI just realized I haven't updated since we got back from our vacation... and that I'd better say *something* before we head out. Again.
On Saturday, we decided to make the big push for home. Not too bad of a drive from Roseburg, really. About six hours, I think. We did make one mistake... not stopping every few hours to get out and walk around. Ever since the car accident, it's something I've found I really need to do, or I end up with the problem I have now... the muscles in my hips are a bit unhappy with me.
We did stop off at two places in Portland... finally making it by Bob's Red Mill, home of much grainy goodness. The cafe had some really excellent food, and we stocked up on some hot cereals as well as rough ground grits. Mmmmm. I want to go back with a better idea of things I'd like to buy, since there are discounts for buying stuff by the case.
After that, we spent a bit of time trying to track down The Scottish Country Shop -- it's on Powell, which is a VERY major road in Portland... but it's on a little side street that sort of juts off next to some raised railroad tracks. Not easy to get to. We'd never actually been to the place before, but we'd heard that they sell frozen haggis... and, yes, I really like the stuff. I'm sure there has to be somewhere closer to home that sells it, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to find. After I get back from the next bit of traveling, we're planning on having haggis, neeps and tatties for dinner. I can't wait!!!
Let's see... other than that, we finally went to see "Hancock" which turned out to be quite good (I'd seen some mixed reviews of it so I wasn't sure what to expect). I guess I should have figured it would be good, considering it was written by one of my favorite X-Files writers, Vince Gilligan.
Oh! And when we started getting the inevitable cravings for Pinkberry frozen yogurt, we decided to swing by Red Mango to find out if it was true that they were practically the same thing. Magic Eight Ball says: "It is certain." Okay, maybe not EXACTLY the same thing, but near enough as makes no odds. Even better, a small servings is only 2 Points on WW. Huzzah!!
And now, we're finishing packing for the next trip, which is just a quick one... flying down to Utah this evening to stay with my in-laws overnight, then borrow a car and drive up to Montpelier, Idaho for a family reunion (why couldn't they have scheduled it for last week, when we could have just stopped on our way back from San Diego??), then back to Utah for a day or so before flying home Monday evening. And about 12 hours later, heading back down to the airport for my trip to Kentucky to visit
nmissi and to drive up to Indianapolis for JadeCon/GenCon. Whew. I'm going to be *so* happy to be home when all this is done. That's just too many trips in way too short a period of time.

Date: 2008-08-07 05:14 pm (UTC)And yay for haggis! I ate it in Scotland and loved the stuff. Of course, at the time, the other ladies at the table told me that we were eating v. superior haggis, NOT like the ordinary stuff. But anyway, it was delish!

Date: 2008-08-07 05:33 pm (UTC)As for haggis... we used to always stop at a little restaurant just outside Chehalis, WA (it was in an old farmhouse just off the freeway) that served British and Scottish food, and that's where I discovered I loved the stuff (the first time I ate it sort of as a self-dare). I have absolutely no idea whether the owner made it herself or bought it from somewhere else... and I'm really hoping the frozen stuff we bought down in Portland is as good. Because there's no way I'm going to attempt to make it!
