Comic-Con Day 2
Jul. 25th, 2008 11:22 pmReally starting to feel the strain of standing for my four hour shift. Ow. On the plus side, by the time the day was over, it actually felt good to walk the 1.5 miles or so back to our hotel (rather than wait in the hideously long bus lines). Which in turn meant we walked past a Pinkberry and decided to give it a try, since neither of us had ever been to one before (and after it showed up in Dr. Horrible, we'd wanted to see about stopping by one while we were in California, anyway). It was quite yummy and the flavor reminded me just a bit of our family's homemade buttermilk custard ice cream.
Backtracking a bit... we started the day by glancing through the art show, which was the typical mix of stunningly beautiful and stunningly bad. As always, I tended to gravitate toward the spacescape type of paintings... although there were a few good dragons scattered around. Most of it was typical convention fare: winged cats, winged wolves, winged humans. (What is it with wings, anyway?) We had a bit of a snicker at some paintings of various male "demons" who were in states of undress... so the Art Show folks had printed up little squares of paper to stick over certain parts of their anatomy with the words "naughty bits" in a fairly generic font. The whole effect was quite silly.
rackham tried getting into the Dr. Horrible event early this afternoon, but decided the line was too long and he'd likely not even get a chance to stand at the back of the room. I attempted to get into the "Spotlight on Jim Butcher" but had about the same luck as Rackham had earlier... and the line for the "Bones" panel wasn't much better. I decided to skip the "24" panel since I still haven't seen last season. Eventually, I did make it into an event... Penguin Books had several editors on a panel talking about upcoming book releases (it was the only thing left that was even mildly interesting to me that I thought I had a snowball's chance in Hades of actually getting into).
We'd originally planned on going to the showing of Dr. Horrible tonight, but after the packed crowds at the event earlier in the day, we figured there was no way we were going to get into it and headed back to the hotel (which is when we decided to hoof it, rather than wait for the convention transport... as far as we could tell, the bus we would have been on arrived right around the time we walked past the bus stop near our hotel). And then we logged onto the internet to find out they'd expanded the number of showings by, well, quite a bit (showing it more than once in several different rooms), so we probably would have been able to get in to see at least one of them. Oh well.
Other than that, the day was mostly spent directing people to the line entrance at the booth and answering the same questions over and over again. It's quite gratifying knowing that most of your contributions could be handled by two well placed signs. :-p However, getting to chat with people a bit while they wait is really the best part of this whole gig.

Date: 2008-07-27 10:27 pm (UTC)I've been following the tor.com updates - and one of the tor guys twittered through the entire Dr. Horrible panel. It was very very funny. (It's posted on the tor blog now).
It all sounds amazing, but too crowded for words!
