Just wanted to drop a quick note thanking everybody for their prayers and well-wishes! It really meant a lot to me of the past few days.

To quote my aunt, my mom "looks pretty good for someone who looks that bad." She got really banged up -- lots of lacerations and she's practically one big bruise, she broke her sternum, has six fractures across five vertebrae (none of which are a danger to her spinal cord, so no surgery, just a huge torso brace she calls "The Plastic Maiden" (as opposed to the Iron Maiden)), a hairline fracture in her right wrist (it's completely bruised and swollen from the elbow down through her hand), and she crushed her left hand. She's already had surgery on her hand and they'll have to do more in about three weeks. All in all, while it's still really serious, she actually came through it better than she could have and we're all just grateful she's alive.

I've got pictures of the car in the lot where it was towed here and here.

As far as we've been able to piece together (she doesn't remember the accident at all), she had a tire going flat that pulled her off the road onto a very soft shoulder which probably yanked the car even further to the right... she over-corrected and went careening across the road, into a ditch and up an embankment, getting launched several yards away where the car rolled over a few times before coming to a stop right side up.

Her air-bag didn't deploy, but that likely saved her life, since she was unconscious for a little while before anyone came along (the rescue people said she probably would have suffocated). It's a rather remote road, but the first person to stop was a retired EMT who had kept up her training and carried a kit with her... and also had a radio she could use to call for help (which was good, since there was no cell-phone service in that area). She stayed with my mom for an hour until the helicopter arrived, working to stop the bleeding and talking to my mom to reassure her and keep her calm. Somewhere out there in Southern Idaho is a woman named Amelia who deserves a halo.

I also wanted to thank everyone who expressed concern about my Wednesday night drive from Seattle to Boise -- it made me much more aware of what I was doing, and kept me from making this an even worse occasion than it has been.

My mom's got a very long recovery ahead of her, but seems to be on track already... they're hoping to release her to a rehab facility early next week sometime, and then maybe even home a week or so after that, depending on how well she does.

Thank you all once again! And I'm likely to be offline for the next few days -- not as much of a chance for internet access at my aunt's house.

Yikes - that's a pretty horrific thing to happen. I'm so glad your mom has come through as well as she has, and I'm crossing my fingers she'll recover safely.
