Well, that wasn't so bad

Rather than open the fridge or heat canned soup on the stovetop, we decided to head out and drive until we found a restaurant with electricity (since the power outage was nowhere near as widespread as the big one last year). It turned out that everything over by Evergreen Hospital still had power... so we had a lovely dinner of Cajun Italian food (no, we've never figured out what that's supposed to mean, either) at a restaurant filled with other people who had the same idea!

By the time we got home, the power was back on (which is what we'd been hoping for). Judging by the time flashing on our alarm clocks, it had come back about five minutes before we walked in the door, so it was only out for about three hours total. Not too bad! (Oof! The news just reported that our power company still has 85,000 customers without power.)

The winds did manage to completely blow over the arbor type thingy on the side of our house, snapping off one of the climbing roses down at the base. This is mostly just an inconvenience, since we'd been planning to tear the thing down to replace it next spring, but it's also a pretty big mess that we'll have to work on this weekend.

Apparently, we're due for heavy rains tonight and another batch of windy weather (not quite as strong, but still packing a bit of a punch) sweeping through here tomorrow around Noon. So I could get a chance to use that Jiffy Pop popcorn, after all!

Uggh, what a mess. Sorry you've got to clean that up over your weekend. As someone who contends with hurricanes all summer long, I can sympathize with you and say thank God it wasn't worse.

Yeah... and especially compared to some of the other weather events that happened yesterday (I'm thinking in particular of the tornado that hit Pensicola). So far, we've only had one fatality and that was someone who, um, I hate to say it, but he pretty much died because he was an idiot (he was out kite-surfing on Lake Washington during the height of the storm). And I believe that so far none of the injuries have been particularly life-threatening either... although I haven't heard the latest on the woman who had a tree fall on her in a mall parking lot.

I lived on Guam as a kid and we got slammed by typhoons several times a year... in comparison, this really is nothing (last year's windstorm, OTOH, reminded me quite a bit of being in a typhoon). I think the big difference is that we're a lot more dependent on electronics than I was as a child, so I feel the loss of electricity a bit more keenly. :-p

I was actually chatting about it with my mom right before the surgery last month and she pointed out that we'd ended up going without electricity for three months and without running water for a month after Typhoon Pamela... I totally didn't remember that! I mean, I knew we'd been without, but it didn't seem anywhere near that long. Nowadays, I'd be a gibbering wreck in the corner after the first day without internet access!

Ok, three months is a little much for electric but the water for a month would drive me nuts moreso...

At least it was tropicaly tho...
