You've probably all seen this already, but reports are coming in from Comic-Con that Joss Whedon said the "Ripper" movie (aka Giles on his home turf) is still in the works!

Weirdly, I was just discussing this with [livejournal.com profile] taradaktyl a few weeks ago -- she was wondering if I'd heard anything recently, which I hadn't. My opinion at the time was that it was never going to happen... based largely on the fact that the occasional rumors we'd been getting had seriously dried up over the last year.

I still think it might simply be the shiny object JW dangles in front of the fans to keep them hooked... but the fact that he was actually talking about it in a very large venue gives me at least a little bit of hope!

I dunno, I've become quite cynical -- I mean, look, Wonder Woman was all a go, but in the end it came to nothing.

Yeah... and the fact that it's a deal with a foreign production company, to be filmed in another country, makes it even more unlikely that Joss would be able to pull it off... if only because of the red tape that's likely to be involved.

OTOH, since he doesn't have Wonder Woman on the horizon, he may have the time right now to seriously pursue it.

I really do find it funny, though, that he made this big announcement just a week or so after I'd completely given up on the idea.

I think it is too late - ASH is too old to play a Giles in his early twenties or so - I don't think he could even play a Giles in his early 30s. Just as DB and JM are too old to play ageless vamires stuck in their twenties, no matter in what time period one would set something.

The only possibilities to continue the storylines is with just the humans, and them being older than they were at the end of the series, or they could just about get away with the same age. Or you need to recast.

All of which is sad.

With the success of Dr. Who and Torchwood, I could see how the BBC might be more receptive than they were a few years ago. And of course Joss is less busy. But I'll believe it when I hear they are filming.

I would think if they plan to show pre-BtVS Giles, they'd have to use another actor, with ASH only doing present-day stuff. I doubt they could plausibly make him look 15 years (or more) younger than he is.

ASH has a mention of the news on his website too - but it doesn't seem likely to me....

He did say next year, apparently. I don't remember this having a timeline before. I don't think his age matters, since from what I recall it was supposed to be set post series. I wonder how that would affect the comics being 'canon'.

I remain optimistic. I mean, I never would have dreamed James would be on Torchwood. Strange things happen.

Every time I think that Star Trek is off the tv, and Doctor Who is hugely popular, I pinch myself. Hard.

Did you say you were going to Dragon*con? Because I am, first time.

I'll believe it when I see it or at least once comtracts are signed and filming begins *sigh*

I'll believe it when I see it. Whedon is always promising stuff he doesn't deliver.

I adore Joss, but he can be a tease. I don't think he intends to do it. I think he just has so many ideas rattling around in his head that he thinks he can get it all done for us.

I'll be a happy supporter of the film, should it come to pass, though.

I'm suspecting fan-baiting/bigging himself up.

But I am a cynic.

I hadn't heard about the Ripper movie, but it does sound interesting. Of course, I'm not going to really believe it will happen until I have an air date. :)

I'm afraid to get too excited, but if this does really happen, it would be fab. Much better at this point than anything featuring Buffy herself, imo.

I think it has more chance than the Spike movie ever did, which, granted, is not saying much. But at least Joss seems to have some degree of genuine interest in a Ripper story, and I don't think he's ever been really interested in a Spike story.
