Ice Seige, Day Two
Nov. 29th, 2006 12:33 amWell, that was a fun day during which we got almost nothing done. I'm not sure why
rackham being home from work and the two of us being trapped in the house meant I could be a total slacker... but that's pretty much what happened. We ended up playing computer games together for a good portion of the day. We were pretty surprised when the UPS guy stopped by this afternoon (with my Cordelia doll!!). I'd sort of assumed UPS and FedEx and even the US Mail wouldn't be out and about. He had chains on his truck, but he also said the main roads really weren't too horrible.
Our cul-de-sac is completely covered in compacted snow and ice... but Rackham noticed this afternoon that there was an area with a solid ice sheet, and then he realized there was a bit of a channel carved out of it... because of running water. Sure enough, one of the tiny "manhole" covers (it's about eight inches in diameter) had a very steady little geyser. We called the water company who had a crew out within about an hour (that really impressed me, considering the sort of things they're likely dealing with right now and the nasty road conditions), who determined that yes, there's a problem with the waterline somewhere nearby. It hasn't had a noticeable effect on our water pressure or that of our neighbors, but we're supposed to be watching for that. They'll be coming back out to fix it, after they've gotten some of the more serious problems in the area taken care of. In the meantime, they spread de-icer all around the lower part of the cul-de-sac (i.e. the area right in front of our driveway). Of course, it'll still be a sheet of ice again by morning.
Our next door neighbor decided to walk to Safeway (it's about a mile away, so that's not too bad) and invited me along. I was actually a bit tempted, since there wasn't any other way I'd be getting any exercise today... but that would have been a mile each way of walking on a potential ice rink in below freezing temperatures. Oh, yeah, my lungs would LOVE that. *mutters*stupidasthma*mutters*
We had spaghetti for dinner, using some of the stuff leftover from the last time (I am SO completely sold on adding wine to spaghetti sauce now), and earlier in the day I threw together some orange cranberry bread using oranges and fresh cranberries leftover from our Thanksgiving cooking. Yum! I heard a news report about emergency personnel taking provisions in to some people in the outlying areas because they were running out of food. How the heck do you run out of food in only three days?!?!? Especially right after Thanksgiving. Sheesh.
It's looking like tomorrow is going to be another nasty day. Temperatures well below freezing and the compact snow and ice still hasn't melted away... and then we've been told to expect another winter storm sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening (supposedly right around rush hour). So, um, I think we may be homebound again. Maybe tomorrow we can actually be productive!
