You know, there's nothing like not being able to leave the house to make you want to be somewhere else. Honestly, there's nowhere I need to be and I absolute do NOT want to try driving... and yet ever since I woke up this morning, I've been antsy to go do something. Not that there's anywhere I'd be able to go, even if I was stupid enough to try driving anywhere.

[livejournal.com profile] rackham's office is closed... which makes sense, since authorities are telling people to stay home unless it's an emergency. The roads are covered in thick sheets of ice and it's not likely to change, since we're not going to get above freezing today, so no ice melting that way.

And remember that TrafficCam shot I posted last night? Apparently, I-405 was closed all night and finally reopened not too long ago... they were interviewing people on the news who had made it back to the Park & Ride not too far up the road from us, which is where they slept last night. Some of them ended up with a 15 hour commute home from work. The highway department did an absolutely wretched job of letting people know the road was closed, though, so people kept piling up, assuming it was slow but clear. In fact, Rackham had to do some digging on the King County Metro website last night before he found the closure notice. It was at that point that we called Mekle back and Rackham acted as Operator (a la "The Matrix") using various traffic cameras, road condition reports and Local Live Maps to guide him through the surface streets to his home neighborhood... even then, it took another hour for him to get there. OTOH, at least he didn't end up with a 15 hour commute! Yikes!

Hee! On the news, they were just showing a series of TrafficCam shots from around the area with "Ice Ice Baby" playing in the background.

Weather.com is reporting that it's 17 degrees and feels like 9 right now. It was 21 degrees when I woke up this morning at 6! Yet I, too, feel this bizarre need to go outside.

I'm going backwards through lj, so clearly I'll be reading more about what's happening, but things really are nuts when you're covered in ice and it's gray but in the 60's here. It's supposed to go down into the 40's this weekend, but seriously, I think we're seeing the effects of global warming all over the damn place.

Yikes! I'm just glad you're all safe! We were supposed to get that storm last night, but, um...didn't. There's maybe an inch of snow on my backyard wall. It's gray and icky out, and we're supposed to get more snow over the next few days, but this one either went around us or fizzled.

I'm sure the mountains are happy, however.

One of my daughter's friends has an epic tale of going back to Western on Sunday; it took her family 15 hours to get there (and all of the other three had work at this end of the trip yesterday- must call and see how they did). It's mostly cold here, 24.1F (about 4C) at 9am.

I really truly hate snow.

Julia, it interferes so with life in general

Definitely a day for staying in. Love the mental picture of [livejournal.com profile] rackham co-ordinating your friend's journey via all the traffic cams - how did we cope before the internet?

We had a snow storm in Colorado a few years ago, and we were snowed in (literally) for about four or five days. It was nuts!

While part of me would really enjoy a couple of "snow days," I completely understand the "I want out of here!" feelings. Stay safe and warm.

It is such human nature to be antsy when you're snowed in. Believe it or not, I actually found walks out in the snow to be highly beneficial.

Of course, if it's ice? You're kinda screwed. There's no walking on ice that's not nice and flat in a rink.

Hang in there!

Some of our offices in your general vicinity went in, but I never head weather (ha!) they got sent home early or anything. Probably not, they have some workaholics there...

I feel your pain, sister. There's no snow here (well, there was this morning, but it's all melted off), but the combination of having pinkeye and not having a vehicle... well, it royally bites. Nuff said.

Yikes! I find it nearly impossible to imagine that much snow. Sounds incresible ... and inconvenient!
