fenchurch: (Punk Spike)

You know, I'd set a goal to try writing up reviews of AtS this year, but every time I sit down to do it, I go read [livejournal.com profile] rahirah's LJ and wind up just wanting to write: "Um, what she said."

I'd even mentioned to some friends this evening that the Optimist in me couldn't help but think that part of why Buffy isn't speaking to Angel had to do with the fact that not only has he made a deal with an evil law firm, but he was also the one who gave her the amulet that killed Spike. Of course, then the Realist pops up and mocks me for being naive, until getting bashed over the head with a table lamp by the Optimist who proceeds to spew fanfic ideas at me.

Anyway, needless to say, I loved the episode. I think it may be the best of the season so far... and I think it really helped that DrewGod and DeKnight seem to have a firm grasp of the characters. Someone *finally* used the real differences between Spike and Angel on the show, instead of trying to manufacture traits that just wind up making them even more alike.

And I hate to say it, but as much as I love the other characters, I'd happily watch the Spike & Angel Show anytime. Those two have such wonderful chemistry together, and I don't mean that in the strictly romantic way. JM and DB just play off each other so well... it's incredible to watch.

Hmm... what didn't I like? The "Ewwwww" factor. Oh, and the incredibly crappy special effects they used for handless Spike.

ETA: Oh! And Andrew!! Loooove Andrew! Especially since the writers did the one thing I'd been saying they *had* to do ever since I heard he was going to be in this episode: Give Spike a great big hug the first time he sees him. Yay!!! At least *someone* is happy to see Spike.

I didn't so much think about it in the context of Angel, but I definitely got the impression Buffy was mourning Spike's loss someplace away from California. I have no idea why, but suddenly Rome has definite mourning vibes!
