Sep. 26th, 2006 02:30 pmI finally had a chance this afternoon to watch the series premiere of Heroes... and yeah, I think I'm hooked. I don't think it's going to be a contender for Best Television Show Ever, but I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take things. I'll post more about it later, since I don't want to spoil anyone who hasn't gotten to see the episode yet.
This morning I woke up to the sound of a trapped cat. Zoë was obviously stuck somewhere... but not in any of the usual places (the bedroom closet, theJunk Space Room, the hall closet). I figured she didn't sound like she was in pain or anything, so further searching could wait until after my brain had a chance to wake up... I wandered into the kitchen, got a glass of water, noticed that she still had half a bowl of food left from the night before (not terribly surprising, since it was a flavor of canned food that she doesn't really like), shrugged and headed down to the Library to hop on the computer.
rackham's first comment to me was about not being able to figure out where she was, either...
Eventually, I wandered back upstairs and tried the closet in the guest room (since the meowing was loudest in that room) and a few other lesser used spots. And then it hit me. I headed back downstairs, opened the front door and Zoë zipped right past me! She'd evidently sneaked out when we were taking the garbage out before heading to bed last night... and since we hadn't seen her, we hadn't played the "game" of trying to round her up right afterward. Fortunately, it's not getting too terribly cold here yet and we're pretty sure she used to be an indoor/outdoor cat, but she was sticking to us like glue all morning and has been sleeping on the Darth Vader chair all afternoon. Maybe this will teach her not to sneak out for grand adventures!
I've already started packing for the trip to England next week! Yeah, it's a bit early... but the anticipation is killing me and I figured this would be a good way to keep some of it at bay. So far, this has meant cleaning the guest room (the bed in there has such a convenient horizontal surface for stuff to collect on), dragging out the big suitcase and tossing in things like the travel alarm clock, some spare pillowcases (we're both pillow fiends, so we plan on buying some cheap ones when we arrive in London that we can use for two weeks and abandon) and the start of the toiletries bag. I figure not only should this help with the anticipation end of things, but we should also, hopefully, be less likely to leave behind something we really wanted to take.
We finally reserved a car for when we leave London... and I'm rather glad we had some trouble with the online reservation stuff and had to call in for it, because we're saving about $60 by pre-paying for the car rental. We're also getting down to the wire on some of the room reservations, but have finally heard back from both of the B&Bs we were hoping to stay at... We'll be staying at Myre Edge Farm when we're in Lancashire (sadly, Whalley Abbey was already booked) and at Ballachrink Farmhouse when we're on the Isle of Man. That leaves a few gaps along the way, but everyone we've talked to has said that we shouldn't have a problem finding *somewhere* to stay as we travel... and I really hate being completely pinned down on where we need to be, every step of the way.

Date: 2006-09-26 11:51 pm (UTC)London Calling!
Date: 2006-09-27 12:08 am (UTC)1) Camden Town. One of my favourite areas of London. Both funky and fun. Great markets.
2) Do not go to Oxford Street on Saturday. It's insanity. I would say give it a miss entirely, but it's a bit of an institution. Be sure to hit Selfridge's. I think it's more fun than Harrods.
3) Very cool Belgium beer bar. Amazing food. Don't miss the chips. http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/29/2904/Dovetail/Clerkenwell
4) Great market near Liverpool Street Station. I think it's Petticoat Lane.
5) Half-price ticket booth for West End shows at Leicester Square. This is where all the huge movie theatres are and the London premieres too. Get there by 10 AM to queue. Be sure to go to the official one. It's its own building just off the centre. http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/tkts
6) Very cool department store -- http://www.liberty.co.uk/
7) This one I learned from Hokie -- you can go to Evensong at Westminster Abbey. It's free. Liz and I went and Luci and I went and it's amazing. http://www.westminster-abbey.org/services/serv_main.htm
8) Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station. Totally worth it.
9) Oxford. Go there if you get a chance. It's amazing. I spent a lot time in the library there. Great falafel shack in the market area. I can't remember the name, but it's a blue metal shack. When Susan and her family were over they went on a walking tour called "When Alice Met Harry" which covered the sites from Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. They said it was fun.
10) Best sandwiches: Pret a Manger and Upper Crust(everywhere). Best coffee: Coffee Republic (usually have internet too). Best falafel: Gabes just off Leicester Square on the way to the National Portrait Gallery (I think it's Charing Cross Road).
I think that's it for now. Sorry it's so scattered and disorganized (err... like my brain). Have fun!
