Today, we found the perfect place to park during Comic-Con. We avoided the nasty traffic backup by the Convention Center, it was only $10 for the day, it was a covered lot and it was just a block or so walk from the Con. Excellent!

We got there about 8:30 or so, and the line for the 10:30 "Lost: Season 3" presentation was already pretty huge. They let us in early, thankfully, since the floor was not terribly comfortable, and we ended up getting fantastic seats: fourth row back, just to the left of the stage on the aisle (considering the room held something like 5000 people, that's quite a feat). Jorge and Daniel Dae Kim were on the panel along with Damon Lindelof, Bryan Burk and Carlton Cuse, but I'm afraid I don't really remember very many details... however it did get me excited for the new season. Our row was the one behind the reserved section... and we ended up sitting right behind DDK's wife and kids (I think [livejournal.com profile] cynthdiane got some good shots of him waving in our direction (at his family, of course, but it was a good angle for us)). And, of course, for some reason, my camera just would not take good photos today. :-( I've got some lovely blurry shots though.

Between panels I checked my cellphone to find that I had a voicemail from [livejournal.com profile] fenwic letting me know that she was at Comic-Con and was at the "Lost" presentation. I gave her a quick call back, asking where in the room she was... and I spied her, standing up in the third row of the middle section, just a few yards away! So, we met up out in front of the stage and chatted for a bit before they started...

"The Simpsons" presentation! With all sorts of writers and producers and Matt Groening, himself. We got to see some rough "footage" from the upcoming Simpsons movie, which looks like it should be good (it was REALLY rough, just penciled-in scenes that were more flipbook style than true animation).

Cynthdiane and her son headed off for the Kevin Smith event around then (and he was apparently a no-show), but I stuck around for the Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen and Forry Ackerman panel... which was basically three elderly men rambling on. But oh.... what ramblings!! I'd known that Bradbury and Harryhausen had been friends as very young men, but I hadn't known that they'd been introduced to one another by Forry! I actually wish I'd taken notes or had brought a videocamera... they had some marvelous tales to tell, and of course I don't remember the specifics now. One thing that sticks in my mind though, was Forry talking about the time (as he says) a god came down and walked among them... i.e. the time he got to meet H.G. Wells at a convention in LA. (This means I've shaken the hand of a man who shook the hand of H.G Wells (technically, I've gotten a hug from the man who...) One of the moderators later got him to do his impression of H.G. Wells, which was funny and, I suspect, fairly accurate.

Because of the size of the room, the fact that it was staying pretty much completely packed through every event, and that I had two other very popular panels in that same room I wanted to see later in the day, I decided to just stick around in my fantastic seat... so, essentially, I spent the ENTIRE day sitting in the same seat in a huge conference room. Even though that meant sitting through 90 minutes of Stargate stuff... two shows I've just never gotten into and don't know anything about. Thankfully, they told some funny stories that didn't require knowing anything about the two series, and I also had my PDA with me so I spent some of the time reading fanfic.

Then came the TV Guide panel "2006 and Beyond" -- it had some great people on it: producers of shows like "Medium" (Echevarria) , "Star Trek" (Braga), "The X-Files" (Spotnitz), "Heroes" (Loeb and Fuller) as well as the West Coast Bureau Chief for TV Guide and the VP in charge of original programming on the Sci Fi channel. Oh yeah, and Jorge Garcia and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Yeah... sing along with me, now: "two of these things, are not like the others..." Jorge actually managed pretty well, but JLH just seemed completely out of her element. It was also not quite the subject I'd assumed it would be... talking about upcoming projects. Instead, the TV Guide guy seemed to be under the impression that SF&F television had "changed" recently and wanted to talk about how that was going to work in current and future shows. He kept talking about how *now* SF&F is about human relationships, unlike in the old days when apparently it was only about aliens with tentacles. Um... Yeah. All I can say is at least the producer folks seemed to find this whole supposition to be as stupid as I did, so they talked a bit about what influenced them and how SF&F really hadn't changed that much (but also how, when pitching a genre show to the networks, they still find they have to present it as something else and then bring up the fantastical elements later). Good panel, despite the TV Guide guy and JLH.

And finally, "Veronica Mars"!!!!!!

This time, I took notes (mostly because I suspected I'd be calling [livejournal.com profile] ww1614 afterward to tell her about it, and I knew I'd forget the details.

Some quick highlights, spoiler-free:

Kristen Bell was wearing an "I brake for Wookiees" bumper sticker across her chest... advertising the upcoming movie "Fanboy."

Rob Thomas is in negotiations for VM novelizations... but he wants to maintain control over the whole thing, so it's taking some time.

RT was very talkative, but I thought he came across as a bit smarmy... but that may have been partially because he seemed to be dressed entirely in white (white pants and a white button-down shirt -- or maybe they were just really light tan, to the point of look white). It wasn't a flattering look.

Jason Dohring said he'd been taking acting lessons 3x a week during the break. Someone in the audience spoke for us all by yelling out "Why?!?!?"

Biggest applause was for KB, second for JD and third for Michael Muhney (who was quite the ham!)

JD apparently has a chewing gum habit. And here I thought that was just a Logan thing.

MM was sitting between Ryan Hansen and KB and kept making comments to them through the panel and getting them to laugh. At one point, he whispered something to KB, who started to laugh and then could very clearly be seen saying "Shut up!" Heh!

RH was asked to do his Michael Jackson dance imitation... he did a bit of "Thriller"-style dancing, but then ended it with a mid-air flip (seriously! It was pretty amazing!)

RT said, in response to a question, that he was open to the idea of having Logan do a voiceover in an episode for a change.

There was a bit more, but it's mildly spoilerish, and I don't think it's anything that the spoiled folks don't already know.

Ditto.

I've been at Forry's house where he talked for hours....and I loved it.

Oh, now I'm jealous... I did get to have dinner with him a number of times when he was GOH at the SF&F Symposium, and he told me to give him a call if I was ever in LA and he'd give me a tour of his house... but I never had the chance (something I wish now I'd just done anyway -- made any sort of excuse to get to LA). He always has such wonderful stories!

I may make a post about this later, but one of the other things he talked about was the very first Comic-Con (where he was the GOH). Apparently, there were around 144 people in attendance... and that the talk was all about how they were hoping to someday get as many as 200 people there (keep in mind, there were more than 200 people just in the room that day).

Stargate

All you need to know about Stargate is they are Deep Space Nine, set in Modern Times, instead of Distant Future. Gate to other worlds, then eventually we get spacheships. =) Atlantis is Late episodes of Voyager - stuck on the other side of the galaxy (or in another one) with no contact with home and then they can get home. Although, Voyage couldn't go back and forth it was a permanent one way trip home and they ended the series.

Add in a few aliens, ancient omnipotent races yadda yadda. I think my less than discerning taste in sci fi is getting jaded in my later years.

Um. You didn't take notes for the rest of us? ::sniff:: :)

Um. That was me. Don't know how my log-in fell off there.

Heh! I was wondering! Sadly, no... but then Stargate is a show I really know nothing about aside from the premise. I had absolutely not frame of reference, so my notes would have probably been nonsensical, or contained information known to everyone in the fandom. :-)
