I'm a latecomer to "Alias." Even though it has everything I generally look for in my entertainment (gunfire, explosions, and martial arts), I could never get past my dislike of Jennifer Garner (for some reason she just annoys me). However, after I read all the chatter about how last season ended and the basic premise for this season, well, the intrigue of it was enough to pull me in. Since then, I've picked up the first season on DVD and intend to start watching it during the times my favorites shows are in reruns.
Anyway, some observations as a new viewer, and I'm curious how they differ from those of long-time fans (I should also add that while I do have an idea of the background of the characters, it's not complete, and of course I didn't experience it firsthand):
I actually find the Lauren/Vaughn/Sydney interaction to be interesting, which is saying a lot because generally the love triangle thing bores me to tears. The writers came up with a very believable reason for Vaughn to be in love with two different women, as well as a reason why he would logically choose one without losing the love for the other (and not be viewed as a cad). I'm enjoying the tension and drama this creates... and it makes for some interesting scenarios, such as what we've gotten these last two weeks.
I think the relationship between Sydney and Sloane is the most fascinating one on the show... It's part of the reason I'm actually excited about the idea of watching the older episodes now. I want to see how it developed to this point, and I also want to see more of it on the screen this season. The way the actor plays it, it appears that Sloane has a genuine affection for her... even if he sometimes seems to be fighting it. At this point, though, I'm still not sure what his game is or if he's even playing a game.
Sydney's father creeps me out. Maybe it's just the actor's portrayal, but it does seem to be in the writing too... he's just... amoral in a not-so-good way. I find myself more nervous about what he's going to do than what Sloane is going to do.
I like Lauren, and I have since she showed up (though the accent grates on me occasionally... and at least they put something into the script to explain how she wound up with one). Has she made some "bad" choices? Yep, though from her perspective, there's no way she could have known. She's still pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to this spy stuff... and yeah, I can see why she would be angry at Vaughn for having kept info from her, but she should also realize that sort of thing is part of *his* job. However, I was not in the least bit surprised by the help she gave in tonight's episode... It was sort of how I figured things would wind up going. She was following the rules and doing her job, working for someone who was corrupt and evil... it was only a matter of time before she realized it.
Oh, and Sark is yummy (but I still think of the movie "Tron" when I hear that name).
