fenchurch: (Looking Up)

I can't believe it's been so long since I last updated...

Let's see, some milestones from the last week:

Wednesday: After having had an extreme case of cabin fever strike me the day before, I decided to try driving [livejournal.com profile] rackham's car. It worked okay around the block, so I headed over to my favorite bento restaurant (it's almost entirely residential streets to get there). It went okay, but it was probably a really stupid thing to do. I couldn't really hold the wheel with my right hand, I could shift up but couldn't shift down with my right hand, I couldn't use the emergency brake with that hand either, and I couldn't even turn the key in the ignition without using my left hand. But ooooohhh... I can't remember being that happy in a long, long time. I was FREE!!! I went out to lunch (aka somewhere OTHER than my house) BY MYSELF. Absolute bliss. But, yeah, I really wasn't ready to drive yet.

Thursday: I was able to wear one of my own t-shirts for the first time since December 30th. I've been wearing some of Rackham's, since they're really big and baggy, and will easily stretch over my head without hurting my arm. I can now bend my arm enough to get the smaller t-shirts on. Fantastic!

In general: I can stretch my arm in all sorts of new directions. Trust me, very little in this world feels better than finally stretching a muscle that's been unstretched for over a month. It's still sore and stiff and weak, but it's getting so much better already.

I can now type with both hands with relative ease. My right arm doesn't get as tired and sore if I have it up on the desk.

All in all, while it still feels like it's going incredibly slowly, things are getting much, much better... especially when I pause to remember how bad it was just a week ago or two weeks ago, or a month ago.

We weathered the windstorm that swept through here today without any further damage to the trees... we were just a tad worried that some of the other hazelnut trees would fall, or that the one already down would fall further and take out the fence, but we seemed to have lucked out. We did get some wind gusts in our neighborhood up to 50mph, though... and the storm lasted for about 18 hours, so there's a ton of debris everywhere. We actually had the computers turned off all day... even though we didn't ever lose power, it was fluctuating enough we decided it wasn't worth risking it. Thank heavens for laptops.

I'm slowly getting caught up on "Veronica Mars" -- this week I managed to finally watch "Ahoy Mateys." Now, I will preface this with saying that I've tried to avoid reading comments on the episodes I've been missing, but I do know the basic shape of some of the discussions... I've tried not to let it influence what I'm seeing, though (however successful that can be).

I will say that I enjoyed "Ahoy Mateys" quite a bit, though I'm still a bit mystified by some of the things Veronica is doing. It's annoying because they did a pretty decent job of keeping her characterization consistent, and yet evolving, last year... but this year just isn't working for me. I guess it's more that last year, I identified with Veronica, but this year I have no clue what she's thinking or why she's doing anything.

However, we seem to be getting Logan in the Veronica role... he's the one who had something horrible happen to him while he wasn't able to be aware of it, and he's the one working to figure out the answers to several mysteries, and pulling in other people (i.e. Veronica) along the way to help. I guess that's part of the reason that Veronica's motivations escape me this season... because I don't get where her callous reactions to his situation are coming from. It's just, well, weird.

Loved the ratcheting up of tension between Logan and Weevil... I swear, they've got the best storyline this season. In fact, it seems to me to be the MAIN storyline. Sure, there's the bus... but that's such a passive, background thing that it's actually easy to forget about it.

It was also interesting to get a glimpse into Duncan's psyche. Wow, is he ever screwed up. Okay, we kinda knew that already, but sheesh. I know some basics of what's to come, but everything we've been shown so far this season just leaves me scratching my head, trying to figure out what we're supposed to be seeing here. There was the episode earlier on, where we got a nice compare and contrast between Veronica's reactions to Duncan and Jackie... where they were saying very similar and elitist things, and V was disgusted by Jackie and shrugged it off from Duncan. It's almost like they're not really dating each other, but some idealized versions of each other that they've got plastered over the real person. But I gather from what apparently happens later and from tidbits I've glimpsed of interviews, that we *weren't* supposed to be seeing things that way.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should impose my BtVS-created rule of never reading any interviews or online messages from the creative minds behind the show... or if I *should* be reading them, in order to save myself from getting burned again ("See! Look at this! See how this is going? Psych! That's not what you were supposed to see! You morons! You were actually supposed to see *this* even though we didn't bother showing you!" *pound*pound*pound* -- yeah, I know... I have issues).

So, anyway, good episode with a few things that annoyed... lots of fun plot bits, yet more "Christians Are Teh Evol" anvils (which, as I believe I mentioned before, is a "plot twist" that just never gets old */sarcasm*), an inexplicably hostile Veronica, an obviously screwed up Duncan, heightened Logan and Weevil hostilities, and a poor woobie underdog Logan. Hopefully I'll be all caught up by next Wednesday and can actually watch the show live again!
