North of Spokane

fenchurchWe're visiting my dad for the weekend... sort of to make up for not being able to get over here for Thanksgiving, but also to get in a visit before Christmas. It's friggin' cold here!! Currently, it's a balmy 18ºF (that's -7ºC for those not in the US). Brrrrrrrrr. It's supposed to get down to 0ºF (that's ZERO, aka -17ºC) tonight... which is actually a bit warmer than it's been this last week.
Yeah, there's a reason I live on the other side of the state.
My dad's been really anxious for us to come over and take a look at their computers, which have both been non-functional for around a month now. He was convinced that they might have gotten some sort of virus because both computers died at the same time... we asked if anything else might have happened to cause them to crash and he swore up and down that they just went down for no reason. Well, after we got things apart, figured out that one harddrive was truly dead and the other was as good as, we commented that it was odd because it looked like they'd both been hit by some sort of power spike... which is when he suddenly said that yes, there had been a big power outage during a lightning storm and when the power came back on, the computers wouldn't work.
*insert eyeroll here*
If we'd known that the computers had been fried by a power spike, there's all sorts of stuff we could have brought with us to fix things... but he was convinced that the lightning and the power outage had nothing to do with it (although not now... now he's telling everyone he talks to that they were damaged in the lightning storm). Parents are funny.
We were able to get my step-mom's computer running with a new harddrive, but my dad lost a power supply and possibly a few other things, so it's getting hauled back home with us to see what we can scrounge. Considering how old his computer is, he's likely going to end up with a much nicer system, just from things we happen to have on the shelves in the garage, so it's all good.
Oh yeah, and did I mention that it's COLD here!
