Grandmother Update

And my opinion of my grandmother's chiropractor just sinks lower and lower.

Sequence of events: Grandmother twists while putting log into woodstove fireplace insert and falls into stove, burning her hand. She has some pain in her knee and hip, so she makes an appointment with her chiropractor (since he's helped her with that problem in the past). She goes to see chiropractor on Friday and, upon arriving home, falls two more times trying to get from the car to the house, eventually dragging herself into the house where she calls (excuse my language) dickhead chiropractor who tells her to "ice it" and to see her regular doctor on Monday. I arrive Sunday night, take her to the ER on Monday and I've told the rest of the story already.

I talked with my dad earlier this evening (who is currently with my grandmother, helping her this week) who talked to her doctor today about the results of the MRI (which I took her to get before I drove home last week). I'm a little fuzzy on what's wrong, simply because we were truly playing a game of Telephone and I was getting this information third-hand. Apparently, two of her lumbar vertebrae are compressed (or something along those lines) with some rather serious inflamation which is causing problems to the nerves in her leg. Her doctor is actually surprised she can still walk and has cautioned her to be very careful with her movements, since she could easily become paralyzed at this point.

Her doctor is going to be scheduling her in with a surgeon for later this week (pretty much as soon as he can possibly get her in) and they'll be doing spinal surgery to relieve some of the pressure and hopefully stabilize her spine. This is, in fact, a very old injury that has apparently been getting more and more inflamed as time has gone by (considering she used to work out in the fields with my grandfather, hauling hay and so forth, I'm not surprised she has back problems). Dickhead chiropractor has been treating her for years... and apparently never noticed this problem. Now, it's possible it's not the sort of thing he could notice. After all, it took an MRI of her lower back for her doctor to properly diagnose it. But still... my opinion of the man has reached rock bottom.

As has my opinion of my relatives (with the exception of my Uncle Lars who is still over in Bremerton with his partner Steve, helping Steve's mom during her recovery from surgery), who can't seem to be bothered to return my dad's phone calls about their mother. So, at this point it really looks like I'll be heading back down there to help out during her recovery period (when she is likely going to be confined to a wheelchair, in a very wheelchair unfriendly house), unless we can persuade some of the relatives who actually live in the same time zone and only a few hours away to go up and lending a friggin' hand for a change.

Doctors suck a lot of the time. It also sucks when people don't do what they're supposed to.

On a more positive note, my paternal grandmother had something similar and the surgery really helped, so good thoughts to you all.

Thanks! That's really good to know.

That's pretty much my opinion of most, if not all, chiropractors, but then, my mom was an R.N. I went to one once out of curiosity, with just mild "typist's neck," and was given a horrific diagnosis/prognosis which involved at least 14 more appointments and all manner of treatments to which I said, "No, thanks," and left. As far as I can tell, chiropractors mainly exist to bilk insurance companies and make sure the patient stays a patient as long as possible. :/

I'm always a little wary of chiropractors, even though I've had incredibly good luck with them... I have one leg substantially longer than the other, which throws everything out of whack from time to time. A good chiropractor can put me back in place, send me on my way, and I'll be fine for a few years. Fortunately, I've managed to find ones who know what they're doing and aren't just trying to get me to come in as often as possible. In fact, my very first chiropractor experience was with one who told me, straight out, that his goal was to get me to a point, as quickly as possible, where I didn't need to see him anymore.

That said, I'm still less than impressed with my grandmother's chiropractor.

My brother's surgery in October was for pretty much the same thing (though his was cervical vertebrae). He could barely walk when he went in for surgery. He got nearly all his motor functions back within a month after the surgery.

I hope your grandmother has an easy recovery.

Thanks! And I'm glad to hear your brother's surgery turned out so well! I think the biggest problem is going to be making sure we've got someone with her for her recovery... whether it's me or whether we can convince one of my worthless closer relatives to lend a hand.

One of the things I've noticed about chiropractors is that they seem to take the time to actually speak to their patients in a way the regular doctors don't seem to have time to do these days. The m-i-l often prefers going to her chiropractor for her aches and pains because he'll stop and listen to her. Oh, and their insurance doesn't cover chiropractors, so she pays for the visits out of pocket.

As for the other relatives -- I'm afraid you shouldn't hold your breathe.

I think you may be right about her motivation in going to the chiropractor. And I may be being a bit too hard on the guy, since it took her getting an MRI for them to discover the problem... but I still can't get over the fact that he told her, after a serious fall, to ice it and call her doctor on Monday. Grrr.

And definitely not holding my breath on the worthless relatives... I've already started rearranging my schedule so I can be available to drive out to Idaho Falls again for a week or two. She's already got airline tickets to fly up to my dad's place later this month... and apparently, if she can get in for the surgery soon enough, will still be able to make that flight. So I'd just need to stick around until then.

I'll lay odds the chiropractor was covering his butt and not wanting her to come in to have him mess with something that might be broken. At the same time, he should have had better advice than "ice it" and call her doctor on Monday.

Sympathy on the worthless relatives. We've got plenty on my husband's side, but I've been lucky on my side -- the family pulls together very nicely when something happens.

Oh, man. Have you considered introducing the chiropractor to the relatives, so they can all be worthless together? Efficiency, that's the key.

That just bothers me to no end. Makes me somewhat appreciate the doctor I used to go to. The first thing he'd do prior to treatment is take an x-ray of your entire spine from top to bottom, and from a few different angles. Was very cool that way, he knew then what problems he could deal with, and which would need to be looked at by specialists.

Hmph. That guy your grandmother saw isn't getting any brownies points from me. Glad to hear she's getting looked after now. Hope all goes well before now and the surgery.

Urgh. I know they're supposed to be respectable these days, but I just don't trust chiropractors in general. :P Hearing stuff like that doesn't help.

As the wife of someone in physical therapy, I can tell you there is no love for chiropractors in this household.
