24 - Live Another Day
May. 5th, 2014 11:10 pmI remember when I watched the first season... it had already aired and I'd picked it up on DVD, intending to watch an episode every night or so. And then ended up staying up for 22 hours straight watching the entire thing because it hooked me completely.
I also quit watching after a few seasons... because the suspension of disbelief got to be a bit too much for me and the plotlines started to lose me. In fact, I realized tonight that I don't think I've seen the last two and a half seasons (and I definitely had no idea why the characters were where they ended up at the start of this season). All that said, the first two episodes tonight reached out of the screen and completely grabbed me again. I think the move to a 12 episode season may end up serving the narrative style much better than an extended 24 episode season (even if it does betray the show's central conceit).
But oh... Keifer Sutherland is so good at playing this character (even if I do keep having the occasional flashback to him as David in "Lost Boys"), who is just so awesomely competent and incredible at what he does.
I'm really liking Kate... in part because she's so totally a younger Jack Bauer. Confident and competent and very good at her job, noticing things that no one else does and finding a way to follow up on it when no one else will.
At this point, I think the writers have also done a pretty decent job of telling a story that can be followed by people who may have only a passing knowledge of the old series... or who have either forgotten or never knew what happened in previous seasons (I'll confess, I'm not entirely clear who Audrey was to Jack... I mean, I recognized her and I think I remember something about her being involved with Jack, but nothing really beyond that).
Can't wait for the next episode!!
