Friday and Saturday... in photos
Jan. 22nd, 2013 10:51 pmWell, I got a bit behind in posting photos this last weekend. Not exactly sure why, since I even had a bit of spare time when I could have done it and I just pushed it off until today.
So, we'll start with Friday, although I'll warn you to prepare to be bored. I bring you... The crack in the ceiling! (Thankfully nothing like the one on Doctor Who.)
We're getting ready to paint the living room, which means everything has come off the walls (which are looking more than a little bit worse for wear) and
rackham has started patching up holes and cracks. I wanted to get a shot of this one mostly because it wasn't there when we moved... it showed up during the Nisqually Earthquake in 2001. Yep, the one I missed completely because I'd just left on the drive down to Utah for the SF&F Symposium at BYU and got completely freaked out when I found out what had happened and couldn't reach Rackham for a few hours. Thankfully, the crack along the top of the wall at this spot was the only damage we were ever able to find. And it's now already patched up and ready for painting!

Last week we were finally able to meet up with a local friend who had been looking to give away her pet fish... and since we've been talking about maybe getting fish again, I jumped at the chance. She said she'd give us the tank she'd bought for him and, well, I sort of assumed it would be one of those teeny, tiny ones people get for goldfish. Imagine my surprise when we got there to see a rather decent sized hexagonal tank! There was a rather cool "rock feature" in it as well as a bunch of fake plants and one live one! Also, a whole passel of little snails (I got the impression she'd started with just a few and, well, nature had taken its course).
We were bandying about names... I was trying to come up with fun Whedonverse names to go with the names of our cats, Zoƫ and Numfar. In particular, I was thinking of the characters playing by Jonathan Woodward (although at the time I couldn't recall his character's name from Firefly (it was Tracey)), so Knox or Holden. Rackham was rather keen on Perry (as in Perry the Platypus from Phineas & Ferb, a show we've only recently discovered), but I thought that was sort of bland. But then it hit me... Doofenshmirtz! Rackham loved it too and the name has stuck.
After we'd decided on the name, Rackham headed out to the internet to do a bit of checking and eventually worked up this label for the aquarium. It had to be done! You can't seen Doofenshmirtz in this photo, but you can see a few of the snails (which we have named, collectively, Norm (after the robot on the show)).
Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated (aka the aquarium).

And a bonus photo of Doofenshmirtz, himself. It turns out, we have gotten a fish who is camera shy. I'm not kidding... he'll be out swimming around in the front of the tank just fine, until someone pulls out a camera and he immediately goes and hides. I even tried taking a photo while he was eating and he abandoned his food to hide! Sorry it's a bit blurry, but this was the best I could do before he zipped away again... he's a very fancy goldfish, with really decorative fins and some lovely unique coloring. I'm going to keep trying to get a good shot of him, so maybe someday I'll be able to share a decent photo. You can see a few more of Norm lurking about on the side and the floor of the tank, doing their best to rid the world of algae.
