New Camera!
Jan. 30th, 2014 09:02 pmMy old pocket camera was still working pretty well... except that I had managed to get some sort of crud under the lens somewhere (which was pretty visible whenever I took photos showing the blue sky), so we took the opportunity to replace it (we're still thinking we may try to have it cleaned, because it would be nice to have a camera we won't mind tossing in a backpack when we go hiking). It's basically the newer version of the old one and I'm really liking it so far!
After grabbing a cache over in Duvall, I was heading up toward Monroe when I spotted something I've always wanted to photograph... and figured today was the day!
( Windmill! )
The rest of that trip took a turn for the weird though, when I got up into Monroe. I got into the left turn lane off one of the big major roads, right behind a semi truck... and about 30 seconds later, this SUV popped into view to the left of the truck, totally out of control! I'm not even entirely sure where it came from, but suspect it was coming through the intersection from the right. It was fishtailing all over the places and looked for all the world as if it was being driven on a thick sheet of ice. Just bizarre! It ended up smashing headlong into the driver's side of the semi. I flipped on my hazard lights and got out to make sure everyone was okay. The truck driver was absolutely fine (I'm not even sure his truck was scratched... the SUV hit it just under the driver's side door near the wheel) and seemed as puzzled and weirded out by the whole thing as I was. The driver of the SUV was very obviously shaken up but insisted she was okay. She said she didn't speak english very well (and I suspect she was in a bit of a state of shock, which is not exactly conducive to speaking a second language), but said she had family on the way. I suspect she's going to be VERY sore tomorrow and it looked like she'd also have quite a fat lip (I'm pretty sure it was from the airbag).
They both told me I didn't need to stick around (to be honest, it's not like there's going to be any question who's at fault... the semi was stopped at the light where he was supposed to be), so I gave them my contact info and headed out. The thing that got me later was realizing that if the semi hadn't been there when I got to the light, I would have been the one there to get hit and it would have done a heckuva lot more damage to my car. Yikes!
