Just got back from sorting donated items over at the Redmond VFW for the box-stuffing event later this evening (we're packing boxes with goodies and hygiene items for some of our troops in Afghanistan at 7:30, if any of my local friends are interested in lending a hand). I've been doing this every few weeks now for a couple of months and decided it was about time I make a serious effort to actually get to know the other volunteers.
There's this woman who I seem to end up working with quite a bit and today when we were bundling Ziploc bags I asked her name and told her mine... and she looked seriously taken aback. I mean, I know Fen is unusual, but it's not *that* bizarre... and then she said "I met someone else once with that name!" Okay, very cool! I've only ever run into one other person (over on Facebook... a friend of a friend) named Fen. Then she continued "It was probably 20 years or so ago at a Science Fiction convention."
Okay, color me stunned. I probably had that same expression on my face that she'd just had and as I told her, that had to be me.
Yep, turns out we met at a Norwescon back in the late 1980s. And that's the reason we'd each thought the other looked vaguely familiar, because we'd actually met before! I'd assumed it was because she looks quite a bit like a Fannish friend I have back in Utah, even down to some of her mannerisms and the timbre of her voice... which is why I hadn't thought to ask her earlier where we might have met.
But how seriously weird is that! Not only that we'd met once before so long ago, but that we met again at such a completely unrelated place and were still able to figure out where we knew each other from, after all that time. Wild!
