Day of departure
Oct. 4th, 2006 10:29 amAnd not nearly as hectic as I would have expected. It actually makes me absurdly nervous... like it's going so easily that we MUST be forgetting something terribly important. I guess we'll know by tomorrow. :-p
We still haven't had any luck finding our copy of Where Was Wonderland?: A Traveller's Guide to the Settings of Classic Children's Books, which means it's destined to show up the day after we get back. We're going to be hitting used bookshops while we're in England, anyway, so we'll keep an eye out for another copy (considering they're selling used for 49p on AmazonUK, I'm hoping it won't be too tough to find). Still, I think it's horribly funny that the one book we bought, four years or so ago in preparation for this eventual vacation, is missing in action when we finally need it.
I did remember that I already have some British money... and could even find it! Not that I'll be using it, though, just funny that I've been carting it around for so long and I still know where it is. When I was about 15, my dad was managing a business just outside an air force base. One day he had a customer who went to pay for stuff and pulled out some British money (having just come back from a visit there), so my dad (knowing his teenage Anglophile daughter quite well) bought it from him to give to me. I remember how absolutely ecstatic I was when he gave it to me... yes, a one pound note and a 10p coin. And it's still in my old jewelry box.
We're pretty much fully packed. Now it's a matter of last minute "Oh! That would be handy to have!" additions. I even managed to cram a pillow in my checked luggage... one I won't mind leaving behind, if we need the room for the trip home, as well as a few extra pillowcases in case we need to buy some pillows while we're there (we're both pillow fiends and figure spending a bit on some temporary pillows in order to guarantee a good night's sleep is well worth the expense).
I'm also thinking of bringing an empty water bottle in my carry-on... I have no idea if they'll be handing out bottled water on the flight, or just cups of water. If it's the latter, it would be really nice to have something to put it in that I can stash in the seat pouch without worrying about it spilling.
Or maybe I'm overpreparing.
I can't believe we're actually leaving for England today... there's not enough squee in the world to cover it!!
